Did you know that the Kaipara Harbour, located on the northwestern side of the North Island of New Zealand, is the largest estuarine water body in the country? In fact, it is the largest harbour in the Southern Hemisphere. We are proud to share with you our latest project video featuring the Poipoia te Kākano project which is focused on preserving the Kaipara Harbour's ecological integrity. The long-term plan for Poipoia te Kākano is to eradicate possums, stoats, rats, and pigs from 105,000 hectares across five peninsulas in the Kaipara Moana, with work starting on the Puketotara Peninsula. #predatorfree2050 #conservation #kaiparaharbour #future

Predator Free 2050 Limited is a Crown-owned, charitable company set up to lead the government’s predator free goal.
About us
Predator Free 2050 Ltd was formed in Nov 2016 by the New Zealand Government to realise New Zealand’s Predator Free 2050 goal. The company invests in large landscape projects and scientific research, and leverages new funding to rid New Zealand of the possums, rats and stoats which threaten its unique fauna and flora. Predator Free 2050 Limited’s work is overseen by a Board of leading New Zealanders with governance, science, iwi, conservation, business, rural management and philanthropic backgrounds. Large landscape projects are funded through an Expressions of Interest (EOI) and a Requests for Proposals (RFP) process. Its current science strategy is focussed on achieving interim goals for 2025. Predator Free 2050 Ltd works closely with other parties in the Predator Free 2050 movement, including tangata whenua, the Department of Conservation, the Predator Free New Zealand Trust, New Zealand’s Biological Heritage National Science Challenge, Zero Invasive Predators Ltd, regional councils and community groups. Another excellent article about Kiwi Company Invasive Pest Control's Norbormide. “Getting a norbormide bait for both ship and Norway rats over the line is the biggest advance for invasive mammal control on the New Zealand mainland, and possibly even globally, in decades,” says Dan Tompkins, Science Director at Predator Free 2050 Limited. https://lnkd.in/gC6jaz9e #predatorfree2050 #worldfirst #conservation

A world-first rat-specific toxin is on the way! Invasive Pest Control's Norbormide project was included in our first round of Products to Projects funding. Like all good things, they take time but are worth the wait. Once it gets to market this new tool could help us get to predator freedom faster! Thanks for covering the story Predator Free New Zealand Trust 😍 #conservation #worldfirst #predatorfree2050
A new breakthrough in predator control is on the horizon — a rat-specific toxin that leaves birds, pets, and livestock unharmed. Scientists worldwide have been exploring how to make it palatable to rats. We spoke with Dr Lee Shapiro about a new norbormide formulation and method, which he believes will be “an essential new tool in the predator free toolkit.”

The eradication of rats 🐀 is a tough one, but Kiwi developers Envico Technologies have adapted to various challenges and are showing it can be done! Advancements in technology are paving the way to predator free success, so it's an exciting time to be a part of the predator free movement. Are you with us? #conservation #predatorfree2050 #getinvolved
🌿 Restoring Biodiversity in the Pacific 🌿 We're excited to share that Envico Technologies has just completed another rat eradication operation, utilising cutting-edge drone technology to protect these unique ecosystems. This initiative, in partnership with key organisations, was aimed at safeguarding biodiversity and promoting ecosystem recovery. Our main goals were to: -Eradicate invasive rats -Restore native vegetation -Improve seabird populations -Protect turtle nesting sites Using drones with 10kg payloads, GPS mapping tools, satellite communication, and environmental monitoring equipment, we worked to spread bait, collect species samples, and monitor the environment. The operation wasn’t without its challenges. High winds, sickness, rough seas, and burrowing land crabs consuming bait led to delays. However, we adapted by implementing flexible operational windows, adjusting flight schedules based on weather conditions, and shifting to land-based operations when needed. Together, we’re taking steps toward a healthier ecosystem in the Pacific! Restoring the natural balance of these islands is not only crucial for wildlife but also for the long-term sustainability of these fragile habitats. Stay tuned for more updates as we continue our work in this vital area of conservation! #Biodiversity #Conservation #DronesForGood #EcosystemRestoration #EnvicoTechnologies #EnvironmentalMonitoring

We are proud to be supporting large scale predator elimination projects across Aotearoa. These projects cover over 800,000 hectares of urban, rural, and backcountry landscapes, with more than 114,000 hectares now free of project's targeted species. Cool huh? #predatorfree2050 #Conservation #success

Going into the weekend with some good news and a cute doggo pic to top it off! Congrats to handler Tilde and furry hero Parker who have passed the conservation dog tests! They will be helping Te Korowai o Waiheke hunt down the last stoats on Waiheke Island.
Parker’s got a job! Congratulations Tilde and Parker! It was exciting to hear that Waiheke’s resident stoat detection dog Parker, and his proud handler Tilde passed the conservation dog tests to become interim certified. Well done team 👏 Now get them last stoats! #Conservation #Nature #DogsWithJobs #PredatorFree2050

Technology is once again helping the predator free mission. As we see new tech continually being developed it's exciting to imagine how much easier catching the last predators will be in the not-too-distant future. Thermal imaging has helped eliminate a single Norway rat incursion on Te Motutapu a Taikehu (Motutapu) Island. The rat posed a grave threat to one of New Zealand’s rarest birds, the tūturuatu/shore plover. https://lnkd.in/g3DqgfvN

We are stoked to have Natalie Farell join our team as Accountability Advisor | Kaitohutohu Kawenga Takohanga. Last week, Natalie visited The Capital Kiwi Project, where she learned more about the predator free movement in action. She heard about the challenges and milestones, including the effort required to secure permission to allow over 250 kiwi to return to the western hills of Wellington. Thanks to this mahi, over 100 kiwi have now been successfully relocated to the area. Since joining us in September, Natalie has hit the ground running. We’re excited to have her on the team, and she’s eager to share her insights from her experience so far. Check out her first blog, “From North America to Aotearoa: Joining the Predator Free Whānau.” https://lnkd.in/gC_V7aDt Featured image: Natalie looking out over The Capital Kiwi Project area.
