If you happen to be in the neighbourhood on Saturday the 18th of May around midday, we'll be in the Library helping anyone to connect up miscellaneous gear and make cool sounds!

With support from DCC waste minimalisation fund we are sharing knowledge and redistributing resources to the community.
About us
Re:Gear is a collective of creative and resourceful individuals working from Com2Tech HQ in North East Valley, Dunedin. We aim to redistribute and maximise the potential of items that are seen as waste, including electronic components, musical instruments, and recording equipment. Repair workshops aim to revitalise user equipment and machines and give them a second life as a part of our Robot Farm, which will create opportunities for community learning, design, experimentation, and manufacturing. Smaller materials are organised in a way that they have the best opportunity to find a second life. This can be achieved by assembling them with other items so they they are more useful in combination, such as electronic components grouped with our revived Frankenbooks that can be loaned featuring all required software in order to provide a smooth start in coding and hardware experimentation. Over the past year Re:Gear has been very fortunate to have support from Cargill Enterprises in our efforts to divert materials from landfill that can be reutilised as a resource. This has so far amounted to around 750 kilograms of clear acrylic! All has been recovered sheet-by-sheet from discarded TVs or computer monitors by their incredible e-waste team. We have reached out to distribute the acrylic to educators with laser cutters and welcome any suggestions of who else to connect with. We've also had the opportunity to explore countless gadgets in detail with many successful repairs and have shared our findings through STEM technology workshops facilitated by the Community Communications Technology Trust (Com2Tech). With the support of Dunedin City Council waste minimalisation funding our mission is to build a publicly accessible inventory that facilitates making and repair in our community. Currently our website and database is in development while we also plan for an upcoming open day with an earlier workshop to provide tips on how to revive and recover power tool batteries - details TBA via our Discord channel: https://lnkd.in/dRxFhxcU If you would like to be involved in any way please get in touch!
