This two-room cabin demonstrates the building potential of alternative timbers without using added chemicals. With parts constructed from four cypress species, eucalyptus flooring, poplar plywood ceiling linings and Douglas-fir roof framing, the Specialty Wood Species Cabin might look like a collection of disparate timbers, but it’s that way for a reason. "For Indigenous forestry and for indigenous forestry research, it was something very different almost every day. And that kind of keeps you going." Emeritus scientist Greg Steward tells Ki-Taurangi Bradford on episode one of Branching Out what piqued his interest about indigenous forestry. "Branching Out: Reflections on Indigenous Forestry" is a captivating new podcast series exploring the vast knowledge and experiences of researchers who have spent their careers studying indigenous trees. 🌱 Episode one is coming soon. #indigenousforestry #podcast #bioeconomy #research #BranchingOut

Congratulations to Song Bing Song for securing a Marsden Fund Fast-Start grant from the Royal Society Te Apārangi. The Marsden Fund is regarded as the hallmark of excellence for research in New Zealand and helps researchers advance fundamental research and explore bold ideas. Bing’s three-year project will study the fundamentals of electrocatalysis — chemical reactions activated through electrical currents. It’s world-first research that could lay the foundations for transforming bio-waste into high-value chemicals. Thanks to those who have and continue to support the work. Katharine Challis Robert Abbel Florian Graichen Paul Bennett Stefan Hill Saeid Baroutian from The University of Auckland, who will recruit a PhD student, and Nicholas Bedford from the UNSW. #biowaste #biochemicals #electrocatalysis #research #project #science #chemistry #wastetovalue. What is an indigenous forester and what does it involve? In this Branching Out teaser Greg Steward explains it's not about forest ecology or conservation. It's about managing trees or forests for a defined purpose. "Branching Out: Reflections on Indigenous Forestry" is a captivating new podcast series exploring the vast knowledge and experiences of researchers who have spent their careers studying indigenous trees. 🌱 First episode coming soon. #indigenousforestry #podcast #bioeconomy #research #BranchingOut

Are you a chemistry student with experience or interest in organic chemistry, lab extractions, chemical analysis and applied/industrial chemistry? We've got an exciting opportunity for a summer student to join us to work on Sustainable Jewellery from Upcycled Biomass. It's a fascinating project looking at developing sustainable jewellery using a biobased polymer and natural additives from things like grape marc, slash pine needles and lanolin grease. Europe and New Zealand recognize the importance of science and technology to drive high-tech, high-productivity, high-value businesses and jobs. It is one of the key elements for combating climate change, biosecurity risks and increasing the productivity for the entire economy. Global partnerships are key for New Zealand's aspirations around transitioning to a productive, prosperous and resilient low-carbon economy, supporting high value jobs and exports. This why our Scion teams see Horizon Europe and Horizon Europe enabled partnerships as critical for making impact. Scion's General Manager for Science Services - Marie-Joo Le Guen - contributed Scion's insights into participating in Horizon Europe programmes during a partnership event, organized by CNRS and the Embassy of France in New Zealand and Victoria University of Wellington. https://lnkd.in/gQNKDKRp The discussion identified several opportunities for bilateral research. We identified potential partners and partnerships in Europe and New Zealand that - underpinned by Horizon Europe missions - could turn this discussion into tangible outcomes. Achieving Together is one of our Scion values. While Yi Chen is representing us now in France during the kick-off meeting of the #HorizonEuropean #UPWEARS program, we presented the program in New Zealand yesterday. The event, organized by CNRS and the Embassy of France in New Zealand, featured a panel discussion with: Sir Peter Gluckman (President of the International Science Council), Lawrence Meredith (EU Ambassador to NZ), Antoine Petit (CEO of CNRS), Frank Bloomfield (VP Research at the University of Auckland) and Sue Bidrose (Chair of Science New Zealand). The event also highlighted success stories of collaboration, innovation, and impact from Thierry Correge, HERVE QUENOL and Scion. As we stood at the intersection of #science and #diplomacy, it was encouraging to witness the endorsement of New Zealand's efforts, with a special mention from Hon Judith Collins KC MP at the residence of Ambassador Laurence Beau. A fantastic day for advancing international partnerships and scientific collaboration! #Merci Julian Elder, Florian Graichen, Henri Bailleres, Tara Strand, LIA BIOMATA

This RNZ article and recording captures what we're trying to do perfectly. Upflow, Tauhara North No.2 Trust and Scion are accelerating a technology, which is projected to generate $500 million annually by 2045. It uses bacteria and algae which feed on waste gases from geothermal power, to produce a protein-rich biomass. Turning something that's a problem into something of value. #geothermal #biotech #carbon #climatechange #science #research #innovation #collaboration #partnership #inthenews https://lnkd.in/gBnvGPZc
