This afternoon, we unveiled our much-anticipated 2024 Christmas windows at Smith & Caughey's! This year, we’ve chosen to celebrate The Adventures of Hutu & Kawa, a beloved Kiwi classic from the 1950s by Avis Acres. It’s a story that has a special place in New Zealand hearts. Seeing this project come to life fills me with pride. Our teams have worked tirelessly, dedicating 15 months of planning and creativity to bring this magical display to our storefront. While too many deserve recognition for this feat, I’d like to extend heartfelt thanks to Kevin Broadfoot, Tash Coyle, and Lydia Dinkha, as well as our entire Marketing and Visual Merchandising teams. Their dedication and artistry have transformed our windows into a celebration of tradition and wonder. As we move closer to Christmas, there’s so much more to look forward to instore — from the enchanting decorations and our Christmas Shoppe to the opening of Santa’s Enchanted Forest on 9 November. Christmas at Smith & Caughey’s is a truly magical time. Though this year may mark the end of some beloved traditions, we look ahead with excitement. Smith & Caughey’s has a proud legacy of creating memories, and we’re ready to start new traditions next year. Here’s to a holiday season filled with joy, tradition, and new beginnings!

The iconic Smith & Caughey's's windows are being revealed today, signalling the start of the festive season in the city centre. Just the icing on the festive cake, after their announcement to remain in Queen Street earlier this year. For more than four decades Kevin Broadfoot has been the mastermind behind the windows and it sounds as though this year it will be like no other. RNZ https://lnkd.in/gzM3xZfy

Smith & Caughey’s, the flagship of retail in Auckland’s Queen Street, and one of New Zealand’s oldest and most prestigious department stores has today announced the outcome of its staff consultation process about the potential closure of its retail operations. The Company has decided to implement a new reduced format beyond January 2025. This will see operations downsized and refined to the ground floor of the Queen Street store and the online store only. Smith & Caughey’s Newmarket will close, most likely at the end of September 2024. Tony Caughey, Chairman of Smith & Caughey’s said, “I would like to acknowledge our staff and the challenging time they’ve been through over the last few weeks. They have been openly engaged throughout the consultation process which we’ve operated in good faith. Pleasingly for our team, suppliers and customers we’ve found a path forward to allow us to continue operating, albeit on a scaled back footprint. “As a result, we expect there to be around 100 jobs retained to align with the new business size, with approximately 100 redundancies over the next six months. “Our Queen Street store will remain largely in its current format until the end of January 2025, allowing for the annual family Christmas traditions to continue as planned, including the exceptional ground floor Christmas windows and the Enchanted Forest on the sixth floor. “At the end of January 2025, the Queen Street operations will close briefly for minor works before reopening in the new format in February 2025. Our online retail store will be refreshed to align with the new offering,” Tony Caughey said.

Smith & Caughey’s has today announced to our staff a proposal to consult with them over the potential closure of our retail operations in Queen Street and Newmarket, and online retail stores, likely in early 2025. Presenting this proposal has been a deeply emotional time for the people connected to our historic establishment. We are acutely mindful of the impact to staff, our suppliers, and our customers by the proposal to close. Our Queen Street and Newmarket stores are closed today and will reopen as usual tomorrow at 10am. We have operated as a cornerstone of retail excellence on Queen Street for more than 144 years. Since our inception by Marianne Smith, nee Caughey, in 1880, Smith & Caughey’s has focused on serving the people of Auckland, whilst preserving the traditions cherished by generations of discerning shoppers. We appreciate your ongoing support throughout our many years of trade and your support throughout this difficult time.
