Oral Fluid vs. Urine drug testing #3 The last two posts in this series has compared urine & oral fluid drug testing, and the good✅ & not so good🚫 of each. So... what method of testing is better? The truth is one isn't more favourable than the other! It totally depends on how you are testing, where you are testing and what you are wanting to pick up when carrying out testing. Both urine and oral fluid testing now have standards and verified tests are available for each. As mentioned previously, urine testing has really long windows of detection. With urine, you will be picking up usage from days - weeks ago. Across from that, oral fluid testing will only detect drug use in the last 24 - 48 hours at most. A company who tests staff on a remote site with no proper facilities, that just want to catch people who are impaired while at work🚕, might choose to look at oral fluid testing. On the other hand, a company who tests staff on a high risk construction site🛠️, that don't want any trace of drugs at all, might look at urine drug testing. #oralvsurine #workplacesafety #drugtesting

CANNABIS🌿.. What do you know about it? Otherwise known as Marijuana, Weed, Dope, Pot, or Trees, Cannabis is one of the most commonly ingested drugs in the world, and we're seeing it more than ever in New Zealand as it becomes easier for people to claim it's 'prescribed' or for 'medicinal purposes'. THC mainly comes as a dried plant, but is also common in an oil form, less so made into food.🧁 Cannabis is a depressant, slowing down your body, and leaving you feeling relaxed.. well in theory anyway. It can also make you feel paranoid, hungry, cause panic attacks, and leave you uncoordinated, which needless to say, would not make you a safe person to be around, especially not while holding a safety sensitive role in the workplace.🚷 Detection windows for picking up THC will obviously differ depending on the person and their metabolism, but it will generally be detected up to several weeks in urine, and for up to 6 hours in saliva.⏳ THC tends be very hard to detect, as it is a very sticky drug, and in oral fluid testing especially, requires a lot of swabbing to dislodge the substance. #drugtesting #cannabis #workplacesafety

✋🏻Did you know: the National Drug Testing in Waste Water revealed an average of 6.2kg per week of MDMA usage from January - March this year?! ✋🏻Did you also know that Methamphetamine use averaged 17.5kg per week, and Cocaine use averaged 3.3kg per week, on the same sites across the same months, with a combined estimated weekly social harm cost of just over $21 million?! These are serious numbers, which is why the government have established the Drugs in Wastewater Testing Programme, and also why they publish the quarterly results on the NZ Police website. 🫵🏻EMPLOYERS, if you aren't already, it's time to start implementing a workplace drug testing policy, to ensure your staff aren't contributing to these figures. Keep yourselves and your staff safe! #drugfacts #workplacesafety #didyouknow #drugtesting

Oral Fluid vs. Urine drug testing #2 Last time we looked at urine testing, now we'll check out oral fluid - the newer method of detecting drug abuse. ✅Why is it good? - Oral fluid tests can be carried out in front of the tester, so there is little opportunity for tampering. - Typically viewed as less 'invasive' - Can be carried out almost anywhere - no bathroom required 🚫Downsides? - People can struggle to generate enough saliva for the test, particularly if they have been working outdoors or in a hot environment - The detection window is short compared to urine - between 12 and 48 hours depending on the drug class - It's a relatively new form of testing so there is less case law and scientific track record - Oral fluid can easily contain contaminants that may affect the test result - The devices typically cost more than urine devices So which is better - testing for drug abuse with urine, or oral fluid❓ .. stay tuned to find out! #commonquestion #drugtesting #workplacesafety
