--Capacity constraints require the health system to do more with less--   Health, quite obviously, is an area of increasing demand. This demand, as Paul McBeth highlights, is insatiable (click link to read full article with  references).   Our growing and ageing population makes this a certainty for the next few decades at least. When demand for essential health services outstrips our ability to meet that demand, we have a capacity issue.   This is nothing new. The health system always operates within constraints that limit its ability to meet demand. We all experience capacity constraints. When we can’t remove them, we learn to operate as best we can within them.   When a health system is overly constrained it can lead to reduced quality of care and reduced access to care, which leads to more pressure on the heath system. Not the sort of pressure you can easily solve with budget increases either.   No matter how many people we hire or how many hospitals we build, we won’t catch up with demand for healthcare while it continues to grow. We’re starting from too far back. Even with larger budgets we are constrained by workforce supply in both health and construction.   In some areas, such as residential aged care, the number of available healthcare facilities is now declining.  In other areas, such as primary care, the proportion of GPs is declining. Despite this, demand for essential services they provide keeps growing and it won’t stop anytime soon.   --Doing more with less--   To maintain quality of care and access to care, many hospital departments are being asked to do more with less. Less people, less time, less money, less equipment, less space, less back-office support.   Hospital services will valiantly keep trying to add more front-line staff and clinic space wherever they can, but it’s not easy. We can’t even be certain they’ll keep up with attrition in some departments, which heaps pressure on remaining staff.   We do know, however, that technology can help the existing workforce free up time and help our hospitals free up space.   I applaud healthcare teams and individuals around the country who are pushing ahead with new models of care, using technology to improve the efficiency of front-line workers and free up space at hospitals and clinics around Aotearoa. - Read full article on our latest blog to learn about new models of care helping front-line healthcare teams do more with less. https://lnkd.in/gwN-D6-P

Our Australia team has had an exciting couple of days at Digital Health Festival 2024. Day 1 was a whirlwind of innovation and collaboration at the New Zealand stand. Everything kicked off on Monday with a networking dinner, setting the perfect tone and fostering connections that will shape the future of digital health. The New Zealand healthtech pavilion showcased cutting-edge and innovative healthtech solutions from Spritely, ARANZ Medical, oDocs Eye Care, Flintfox - Intelligent Pricing Platform, CBS - Health Costing Experts, Wofo Medstaff, Clearhead, Florence Digital, Core Schedule, Odin Health, Orion Health, and STREAMLINERS. Highlights included the panel session on "How NZ HealthTech disruptors are connecting care across the globe" and the NZ Digital Healthcare Dinner the night prior, with key industry contacts from private and public health sectors. We also shared our New Zealand manaaki with Australia by hosting networking drinks and a kapa haka performance, sponsored by Orion Health, on the stand showcasing both Kiwi culture and F&B. Day 2 kicked off on a great note with our NZ Healthtech Breakfast, sponsored by Orion Health. We were joined by Orion Health’s VP of Digital Care Records, @Chris Lucas, where he spoke on "Connecting Care across the Globe" and how to solve healthcare interoperability challenges on a global scale. From workshops to keynotes, the energy was palpable at the NZ stand. As the festival wrapped up, we are all excited to see how these innovative solutions will shape the healthcare industry! #DHF24 #NZMadeWithCare See Tomorrow First Bella Katz Hamish Campbell Robert M. Thanks to Rebecca McBeth and the team at Health Informatics New Zealand (HiNZ) for focusing this issue of Digital Connect on the need for remote care. Spritely supports NZ hospitals to provide remote care that is effective, efficient, and equitable for everyone. Even older people who lack experience with technology. Here’s why…. -- 15 years from now Stats NZ predicts that there will be 100,000 more people over the age of 85. Many of those are already over the age of 75 and will be at least 90 by then.   Research from Finland (1) showed “there was a three-fold increase in ED visits made by patients 80 years or more compared to those under 80, and aging of the population will lead to a rapid increase in the number of ED visits.” The same study concluded it “unlikely that increasing ED resources is feasible. Instead, the focus should be on chronic care of the aged and prevention of potentially avoidable ED visits.” In other words, delivering care closer to home. Remote care is a potential game changer here. It can’t replace in person care but it can augment it. Patient outcomes and patient experience is improved, and clinicians are more productive when fit for purpose technology is used to enhance models of care and save travel time for community-based health workers. The problem is, a lot of older people don’t have sufficient technical expertise to easily take advantage of remote care. This is not just a problem for them, It’s a problem for the health system. Older people occupy a high proportion of bed days and represent a high proportion of admissions from ED. If we want to reduce pressure on hospitals we need to scale up an accessible way to remotely manage the health of older people with chronic conditions. So we can safely and efficiently manage care closer to home and prevent ED presentations and hospital admissions. In the future, our hospitals will not have capacity to look after all the older people who are (statistically) likely to present to ED. Without fit for purpose technology, our primary care and community-based workforce won’t have capacity to look after them at home either. This is why we need change. https://lnkd.in/gKbi5D6f Check out the link in the comments for a reference to the Finland study and to read more about what Spritely is doing in this area.
