The US is finally getting serious about carbon. The Environmental Protection Agency recently announced USD160m in grants to target the widespread adoption of Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs). The aim is to to support efforts to report and reduce climate pollution from the manufacture of construction materials and products. Much of this funding has gone to the respective industry organisations to educate and standardise EPD use and enable their wider adoption. The Department of Energy earlier this year granted USD1.5b for industrial decarbonisation projects for steel. A focus on life cycle analysis and scaling carbon’s monitoring and tracking will be a major initiative in the USA over the next couple of years. Our recent guest to NZ, Don Davies PE,SE , a US-based industry champion for low-carbon construction and an authority on life cycle analysis (LCA) in building, says there is an opportunity for New Zealand to capitalise on this momentum, “while adopting the ideas in a uniquely New Zealand way….as you aways do”. #steelconstruction #structuralsteel #steelliveson #trustinsteel #steelsupportsdesigninnovaton #steelisbeautiful #steelisthebackboneofNZ #madeinAotearoa

There are restrictions for through-deck welding of shear studs that exceed 20mm in diameter. But sometimes higher-diameter studs are deemed necessary. We’ve published a fact sheet that discusses the technical basis for this restriction and includes recommended approaches for welding studs greater than 20mm to steel beams. Check out our fact sheet here: https://lnkd.in/gU9Mpwy2 #steelconstruction #structuralsteel #steelinnovation #trustinsteel #standards #quality #compliance

West Auckland’s award-winning New Lynn to Avondale shared pathway is a walking and cycling route that links the two town centres and their train stations. It follows the gentle gradient of the rail corridor and is part of a wider network of shared paths. Steel features heavily in the pathway, which comprises elevated helical boardwalks, balustrades and hand rails, and two new pedestrian bridges. Situated over rough terrain and waterways, the project team collaborated to make the 2.9km pathway buildable and practicable. The project went on to win the 2022 Excellence in Structural Steel Supreme Award. The team: Developer/Owner, Auckland Transport; Lead Structural Engineer (design), Aurecon; Structural Engineer (contractor’s designer), Roadlab; Structural Engineer (construction observation), Holmes; Main Contractor, Dempsey Wood; Steel Contractor, D&H Steel Construction Read the full case study here: https://lnkd.in/g7BXib4H #structuralsteel #steelinnovation #steelconstructionnz #teamwork #collaboration #madeinAotearoa #trustinsteel

It’s encouraging to see more and more young people choosing a trade as a career path and the structural steel industry is an avenue well worth considering – an apprenticeship in structural steel opens doors to many opportunities within the construction industry and beyond. We’ve been celebrating our apprentices since 2016, when the SCNZ Apprentice of the Year award debuted. In the time since, we’ve observed a steady stream of outstanding apprentices whose skills, drive and willingness to learn have helped them to achieve exceptional outcomes. Importantly, the award is also a nod to the industry’s drive to safeguard its future, which is backed up by the numbers: 70 percent of structural steel contractors employ an average of five apprentices. Here, we share the experience and drivers of some of the companies that are training our next generation of skilled tradespeople. We also tracked down some of our award winners and runners-up to find out what impact completing an apprenticeship in structural steel has had on their careers. Read more here and stay tuned for an upcoming series of our structural steel apprentice stories: https://lnkd.in/g2H3iSbn To learn more about the SCNZ Young Apprentice of the Year Award and how to enter for 2024, click here: https://lnkd.in/g8qd_zYy #steelconstruction #structuralsteel #steelawards #apprenticeoftheyear #dedication #skill #steelfutures #careersinsteel

Registrations are closing soon for our 2024 Excellence in Steel Awards! Passionate and skilled individuals and teams are at the heart of our New Zealand structural steel industry. Our annual awards are a chance for us to celebrate our industry’s hard work and successes. Please note, only SCNZ members are eligible to enter. Entries close 28 June. https://lnkd.in/g8qd_zYy Last year, the project team for One Whitmore took home the coveted Supreme Award: Structural Steel Contractor & Steel Modeller: MJH Engineering Ltd ; Builder, Quantity Surveyor & Developer/Owner, Newcrest; Structural Engineer, Dunning Thornton Consultants ; Architect, Jasmax. Occupying a full city block, One Whitmore Street is a landmark 12-storey office tower in Wellington. The 17,500sqm building is designed to withstand Wellington’s unpredictable weather, with a convex profile and rounded corners that help to counter the city’s strong winds. The diagrid structure, with its diamond-patterned exterior, provides structural integrity while eliminating the need for excessive internal columns. Inside, the building boasts a six-metre-high entry lobby and expansive floorplates that capture natural light and provide panoramic views of the harbour.
