About us

Kia Ora. We’re Storybox, and we make moments. Playful moments, magic moments, stop-and-think moments, light-bulb moments, defining moments, watershed moments and even waterfront moments. They’re often real-world experiences, documentaries, and animated stories. It’s a mix we find works. What also works is having art, authenticity, collaboration, playfulness, and respect at the heart of every moment. So, these are the values we keep. From exhibitions to public installations. Light shows to branded activations. Cinemas to scrolls. We’ll get your product, service, brand or message noticed. So, maybe it’s time for a come-to-Storybox moment?

We are so proud to announce the release of our premium 8 part tv series - Hua Parakore - Rebuilding Our Broken Food System. Episode 1 screens on Whakaata Māori at 7.30pm, Monday November 4th. The full series will be available on Māori+ from 8pm - https://lnkd.in/gi9Ex48k Directed by Jessica Feast and developed in collaboration with Dr Jessica Hutchings, the series explores the diverse ways in which Food and Soil Sovereignty is being realised in Aotearoa by Māori growers and communities around the motu. In each episode Dr Jessica Hutchings visits Hua Parakore whānau to learn how and why our current industrialised food system is broken, and the role Māori Food and Soil Sovereignty has in creating meaningful solutions to the climate crisis and food insecurity. This project has been a labour of love, with filming beginning in spring 2022, and we want to acknowledge the generous participants and amazing crew who shared their knowledge, time, and energy. Papawhakaritorito Trust, Māoriland, Brandon Te Moananui, Ruth Korver, POW Studios, and many, many, more. This series was made with support from NZ On Air and Te Māngai Pāho. We’d like to acknowledge Te Waka Kai Ora as the kaitiaki of the Hua Parakore (Māori organics) system. This series is based on the book “Te Mahi Oneone Hua Parakore: A Māori Soil Sovereignty and Wellbeing Handbook”, edited by Jessica Hutchings and Jo Smith and published by Freerange Press. Thanks to Papawhakaritorito Charitable Trust and the Asia New Zealand Foundation.

What an unforgettable weekend at Matariki Ahi Kā! 🌟✨ Thousands of Wellingtonians and visitors joined us on the waterfront to celebrate Matariki, the Māori New Year. With ahi, stunning performances, mesmerising projections, and a special ceremony to honour those we've lost, it was truly a magical weekend. This year, we introduced some amazing new features including the past, present, and future fire pits, weaving, storytelling, and fun activities for tamariki. Plus, the beautiful memorial projection where the public submitted heartfelt tributes for their loved ones. Here’s a glimpse of the magic: 📅 4 nights of celebration 👥 17,500 attendees 🎤 20 live performances 🎥 5 large, stunning projections 🙏 255 heartfelt memorial tributes shared 🍲 16 delicious kai options, including Māori, New Zealand, Mexican, Thai, Malaysian, Indonesian, Polish, Lebanese, Indian, Greek, and 4 types of desserts! End of the financial year getting to you? De-stress with our Hnry waterfront activation! Tax time can be a stressful time for sole traders. DESTRESS with Hnry is a rage-room-inspired experience that’s here to help. The idea: give sole traders a way to work through their tax time stresses. First by smashing crockery and old electronics with a baseball bat: THRILL. Then, by relaxing in a bathtub of stress balls with a calming drink and some low-key tunes: CHILL. This location-based experience is making its debut on the Wellington waterfront on Thursday 4, Friday 5 and Saturday 6 April. The space, built from a series of shipping containers, is open for the general public to come and watch. Écrire / Writing' is the third art film we produced for Pasifika Voices this year - to support SPREP and the Mana Moana collective to amplify the voices of Pacific peoples on climate action at COP28 UAE in Dubai. See the full film here - https://lnkd.in/gCw7Gzj6 The poem ‘Writing’ is a gift to help navigate the lessons of our past, for our present and future generations on the importance of the interconnectedness of our environment with our humanity. The rich words of Déwé Gorodé are a legacy of her work and embodies a spirit of resilience that is present in all of the elements that she depicts and speaks beyond the page. There are echoes of defiance on the impacts of colonisation and how the ‘stone and earth’ will speak, when one cannot, which is a poignant reminder of how the power of ‘writing’ may serve as a witness to our relationship with our environment and each other, that transcends time and space for a new generation. This initiative is supported by Aotearoa New Zealand and coordinated by the Secretariat of the Pacific Regional Environment Programme (SPREP) Mana Moana and Storybox, with the support of Pacific Islands poets and artists, to amplify the Pacific voice at COP28. #PasifikaVoices #SPREP #ManaMoana #COP28 #climateaction #PacificPeoples #environment #writing #resilience #Aotearoa #pacificbiodiversity #ResilientPacific #MoanaBluePacific #BluePacific #EnvironmentalPlanning #sprep #pasifikavoices #manamoana #cop28 #onepointfivetostayalive #anonomouz

It's always a privilege to work alongside the talented Mana Moana collective - Rachael Rakena, Mike Bridgman and Laughton Kora collaborated with poet Ruby Macomber to amplify her words in support of the call for 1.5 at COP28 in "Cry Sis". "Cry Sis" is the weaving of intellect and wisdom through the beautiful words of Ruby Lupe Macomber. The insightful voice of a new generation that has a gentle yet defiant stand on the interconnectedness of our Blue Pacific Continent to the call of the Pacific to keep 1.5 alive! The worlds that are presented by Ruby embroider the textured journey of the environment, ancestral metaphors and symbols of resilience against the complex web of the non-believers. Ruby’s words remind us of the frontline force of her generation of Aotearoa New Zealand with Rotuma and the Pacific beyond. Our work on Pasifika Voices (https://lnkd.in/gZ9wM4d6) alongside the Mana Moana collective and Secretariat of the Pacific Regional Environment Programme (SPREP) continues into It's third year with production work on three new art films, a new website and a media roll out to amplify the voices of Pacific peoples on climate action at COP28 UAE in Dubai. To kick things off is this amazing new hip-hop track “they taking picture of us in the water” by 37 Hz & poet Audrey Brown-Pereira. ///Watch the full video here - https://lnkd.in/gy-_Ry4g It takes a village to raise a child and this version of Audrey Brown-Pereira’s poem “they taking picture of us in the water” is such an example of the Pasifika community of creatives from hip hop artists, poets and dancers coming together for a common cause to raise the global consciousness on the impacts of climate change on our Pacific people. The collaboration led by Anonymouz (Faiumu Matthew Salapu) in the form of a call and response to Audrey’s poem is recognition of the power of music and the universal impact of Hip Hop, which in 2023 celebrates its 50th anniversary. This new version of “they taking pictures of us in the water” in the form of poetry, Hip Hop, dance and digital artistry is a creative collaboration of galaxies to connect people on a global level to the urgency of climate change. #1.5tostayalive!
