🎧 PODCAST | All countries are unique, but a lot of the challenges they face when it comes to infrastructure are remarkably similar. Te Waihanga Acting General Manager - Strategy Peter Nunns recently spoke to Professor Jim Hall, incoming President of the Institute of Civil Engineers (UK) about our work on a National Infrastructure Plan to deal with these challenges. Jim emphasised the importance of strategic infrastructure planning, sharing best practices, and addressing political short-termism. He also discussed the challenges of forecasting long-term infrastructure needs, the impact of climate change on infrastructure, and the necessity of prioritising resilience and adaptation. 📄 RESEARCH | We all know that infrastructure lasts a long time. Pipes that carry water to homes are designed to last generations. Road tunnels in our cities have stood in the same place for almost 100 years. New infrastructure assets are extensions of networks that have been built up over generations. Individual pieces of infrastructure last a long time, but it is our networks that are most enduring. But while they are enduring, they are never static. They are constantly being added to, improved, or repurposed to meet the needs of current and future populations. Because infrastructure lasts such a long time, infrastructure decisions need to be made with an eye on the future. We need to consider where and how we should build infrastructure to best meet the needs of current and future generations. That's why today we have published a report that shares our emerging thinking on what will drive future infrastructure spending demands. The report identifies three themes which ground our approach and eight drivers of future infrastructure investment. We pleased to announce that Geoff Cooper has been appointed as Chief Executive. Te Waihanga Board Chair, Dr Alan Bollard, says Geoff has the expertise and knowledge to help Te Waihanga build on its success, and drive its work to improve New Zealand’s infrastructure system. “Geoff has already led some major pieces of work at Te Waihanga. As General Manager, he led the National Infrastructure Pipeline and the development of New Zealand’s first Infrastructure Strategy, which pinpointed both the challenges our infrastructure system faces as well as solutions”. Geoff has been Acting Chief Executive since Ross Copland stepped down from the role in June 2024. Prior to this, he was General Manager Strategy at Te Waihanga. Geoff says he is proud to lead the organisation at such a critical time. “I’ve been at Te Waihanga since 2020 and know firsthand how important a part it plays in helping New Zealanders get the infrastructure they need. It’s a huge privilege to lead the team in building on the work we’ve done, advising government and setting the direction for a better infrastructure system.” Find out more about the appointment: https://lnkd.in/gCCpXNkC #CE #Infrastructure #NZ #TeWaihanga #Appointment

✔ | Just over a week ago, Te Waihanga Acting Chief Executive Geoff Cooper spoke at Infrastructure New Zealand’s annual Building Nations conference and announced the rollout of the Infrastructure Priorities Programme (IPP) to help address New Zealand’s infrastructure issues. The IPP is a menu of priority infrastructure proposals that have been submitted to us and have gone through a standardised independent review process. This ensures that proposals meet key assessment criteria. A successful proposal will: meet New Zealand’s strategic objectives, represent value for money, and be a project or solution that can actually be delivered. A proposal doesn’t have to be a built piece of infrastructure. It could be a solution that avoids the need for building new infrastructure. Continuous and optimised maintenance might avoid the need for new schools and hospitals; more housing supply next to existing train stations might avoid transport infrastructure in other locations. The process has been designed to be consistent with existing Better Business Case guidelines. To submit a proposal you'll need to know what stage it's at. Anyone can submit proposals at three different stages depending on how far along it is. This could be the ideas stage, the shortlist stage, or the ready to deliver stage. Find out more about the IPP and submit a proposal at: https://lnkd.in/dHb7zUmN Register for our upcoming IPP overview webinar to be held at 12:30pm on 18 September 2024: https://lnkd.in/dS44xYsh #Infrastructure #NZ #Priorities #Event #Launch #IPP
