Food for Thought this Friday 🍎 🧠 At the Gut Foundation, we pride ourselves on sharing information grounded in scientific research. Our board includes exceptional scientific minds like Richard Gearry, Catherine Wall, and Andrew Day, who play a crucial role in advancing our knowledge and education. Unfortunately, this commitment to science is not universal. Many online sources flood the internet with misleading health claims. A recent podcast titled "Kids and Junk Food: Simple Ways to Break the Habit" by ZOE highlighted that while more people are seeking health information online, not all of it is reliable. In fact, research shows that less than 2% of the health information found on TikTok has any scientific basis. This week (and always), we encourage you to be mindful of not only what you eat but also the information you consume about food and health. Are the sources you're relying on backed by science? #Knowyourshit #Giveashit #Nobullshit

Great Gut health for Kiwis is our mission. We create change by funding research and providing valuable education.
About us
New Zealand has some of the worst Gut health statistics in the world. Research we funded in 2004 and then again in 2014, showed that rates of Gut disease such as Coeliac and IBD increase over 50% in Kiwi communities during that 10 year period. The Gut Foundation mandate is to fund research and education, as those two things create change. We have successfully raised funds of over $1.5 million to date, for more than thirty individual research projects. Currently we are funding a first of its kind in the world study into the journey from symptom to diagnosis for Kiwis with gut disease. Donate to change at www.thegut.org.nz

Today's “Let That Shit Go” 💩 session, at the Hawkins Burnham Site in Christchurch, was a huge success, concluding the Gut Foundation's three-part educational series delivered to this particular site over the last few months. These toolbox talks are delivered nationwide, and are a vital part of The Gut Foundation NZ’s mission to spread awareness and educate people across New Zealand. With Movember spotlighting men’s health, it’s the perfect time to focus on the alarming stats surrounding bowel disease. Every day, 9 people in NZ are diagnosed, and 3 won’t survive—with 2 of those 3 being men. This reality underscores the urgent need for conversations about health and proactive measures. Our CEO, Alice 🦺, has been on-site, making sure our tradies have the knowledge they need to improve their health outcomes. Let’s keep the momentum going and #GiveASh*t for a healthier future!

Bowel cancer affects all ages, with rising rates increasingly seen in younger people in New Zealand. Early detection is critical for survival, as 90% of bowel cancers are treatable when caught in time. That's why we're thrilled to join today's Bowel Cancer Awareness Event at Ara, led by Bindi and Mackenzie, students in Health Promotion. Together with Bindi, Mackenzie, Cancer Society of New Zealand, and ScreenSouth Ltd, we educated Ara students on early detection and preventative measures to support better gut health outcomes. Plus, we had some fun games and great prizes, thanks to Purex NZ! Ka pai everyone – it is so important to collaborate to drive greater change and make a real impact in the fight against bowel disease! Recently, Gut Foundation CEO Alice Fitzgerald had the privilege of participating in Oke Charity's 50th working bee at Tamaki Primary School in Auckland. Oke Charity is dedicated to empowering Kiwi kids by creating ‘outdoor classrooms’ in the form of sustainable gardens, giving them hands-on experiences with growing their own food. At the Gut Foundation, we understand that the journey to a healthy gut microbiome often begins in the garden—with what we eat! Growing your own food not only introduces you to beneficial bacteria but also provides easy access to fresh, seasonal, and nutritious fruits and vegetables. From garden to gut, you truly harvest health with every bite! Keep up the great work, Oke Charity—or as we like to say at the Gut Foundation, Good Sh*t! 💩

As you may know, this week is Mental Health Awareness Week! #MHAW2024 #MentalHealthAwarenessWeek At The Gut Foundation, we understand that gut health and mental health are interconnected. The gut microbiome plays a huge role in how we feel mentally; in fact, 95% of your serotonin is produced in your gut... Talk about gut feelings! One way to support your gut health is to introduce foods rich in probiotics, like kefir, and fermented foods such as kimchi and sauerkraut. Probiotics are packed with good bacteria and are essential for a healthy microbiome! To kickstart YOUR gut we have a delicious & probiotic-tastic giveaway running this week, in partnership with Living Goodness and Rebecca Caughey from Good Sh*t Soda. Follow this link to enter via our Instagram. All entries close on Saturday, 28th September, and the winner will be drawn on Monday, 30th September. https://lnkd.in/g4E8MVGS
