"Wellington is dead," we keep hearing. But something's missing from this story: Innovation often flourishes in periods of scarcity and adversity. I’ve interviewed many of the capital’s innovators, who illustrate this so well. 🥜 Roman created Fix & Fogg in an empty lawn bowls club at night, while his wife was expecting their first child. 💰 Claire and James launched Hnry, Australasia's fastest-growing accounting firm, at their kitchen table – with an Excel spreadsheet and a one-page website. 🥤 Joe built Six Barrel Soda after working in hospo. He had no capital, no family money, and no fallback plan. 📈 Sonya was inspired to create Sharesies because she wanted to avoid spending $50 on dinner – and invest it instead. 🍺 Pete created Garage Project after Lion Nathan closed its brewery in Wellington in 2010, citing economic pressures. Yes, councils and governments need to enable economic activity. But they don't create businesses – people do. There's 550,000 people in the region. Many are doing it tough. But right now, new ideas are being hatched in kitchens and garages – incredible projects we haven't even heard about yet. Let's not lose sight of that. ☀️ #storytelling #entrepreneurship #innovation #wellington

2.22 million Kiwis visited New Zealand’s number one news site stuff.co.nz in September, almost doubling our lead on our nearest competitor compared to the previous month, according to the latest Nielsen Online Ratings*. We are also the market-leader for engagement, with the stuff.co.nz audience spending on average 75% more time on site than the closest news website. Stuff Digital Managing Director Nadia Tolich says Stuff has the best talent in the business producing quality journalism across channels and driving engagement with New Zealanders every day. “Month after month, Kiwis turn to us for live and lively journalism about the issues they care about. Quality and engagement are what draw in our audience. We’re delivering and leading the market as a result.” Stuff Brand Connections Managing Director Matt Headland says the results show Stuff offers the most impactful advertising environment in Aotearoa. “We have extended our lead as the country’s number one news site over the past month, with more New Zealanders coming to Stuff, staying longer and enjoying more stories than on any other news site. This incredible connection and engagement with Kiwis means we understand New Zealand better than any of our competitors. “Combine that with our number one position in print** across our metro, regional and community mastheads and premium magazines, there’s really nowhere else to be for brands that want to reach New Zealanders effectively and at scale.” *Source: Nielsen Online Ratings September 2024 Base AP 15+ News & Information Category. Stuff’s lead was 75k in August and 148k in September. **Source: Nielsen CMI Q3 23 - Q2 24. Stuff print includes our daily and community newspapers, newspaper inserted magazines and premium magazine titles.

  • TEDx events throughout the Wellington region continue to be inspiring and successful!

“Small challenges make you stay present”. This was one of the many inspiring messages I heard while attending TEDxYouth@Paparangi last Friday. TEDxYouth@Paparangi is a TEDx event run by young people for young people thanks to the support of many sponsors and it’s host, Newlands College. It was my second time attending this event so it was really great to hear from 8 amazing young speakers. Their passion and dedication were evident, and it was clear that all these speakers are rangatahi who are driving change in their communities. The event’s theme was “Rewriting The Narrative” featuring speakers who addressed a variety of topics including redefining success, the perception of youth in media and overcoming cultural imposter syndrome. Some of the key points I took away included: ➛ “Success is something you define” ➛ “Young people driving change goes untold” ➛ We must "embrace cultural identities" It was also really great to see Telesia Tanoai (who was TEDxWellington 2024 youngest speaker) being the MC for the event! As someone who has helped run many events, involving a range of different stakeholders I want to give a massive shout-out to Aarthi Candadai and the rest of the organising team for the smooth running of this inspiring event (despite challenges which impacted the event)! The inspiring speakers included: Jared Lasike, Esther Sovincet, Ansh Arya, Nushka Parekh, Lola Fisher (Create Happy Media), Leilani Faaiuaso and Leo Robin Mwape. #tedx #tedxyouth #tedxyouthpaparangi #rangatahi #inspiring #youngpeople #youngpeoplematter
