We recently shared some of the key trends coming out of our latest Whakamana i Te Mauri Hiko monitoring report, highlighting Aotearoa New Zealand’s continued progress towards a highly electrified future ⚡
📈 Staying on track 📈 Our latest monitoring report captures the energy sector trends we've identified in Aotearoa and how they track the scenarios we forecast in Transpower New Zealand's 2020 Whakamana I Te Mauri Hiko document. In the 12 months prior to October 2024, some key observations were: 📈 The pipeline of generation capacity reached 32 GW – 3 times the current installed grid capacity ⚡ Five new renewable electricity generators connected to the transmission grid in 2023, the highest since 1996 🏡 Residential electricity demand surpassed industrial demand for the first time 🔋 Developer interest in battery energy storage is surging, reaching 6 GW of combined solar plus battery ☀ In the last three months, around one in three households are including a battery with their solar installation 🏭 One third of emissions reductions from Government co-funded process heat projects are still underway 💻 New capacity from data centres are projected between 250 and 600 MW by 2030 🏚 Two out of three households are concerned about the cost of electricity 💧 Security of supply risks including fuel availability and storage, and meeting winter peak demand are ongoing challenges Find out more about the transformation of Aotearoa’s energy system in our monitoring report below. 🔍

It was a pleasure having these bright and curious electrical and engineering students visit our Hamilton control room to learn what goes into coordinating power supply to meet the electricity demand of New Zealand. There's no question we'll be seeing many of you soon making meaningful contributions in this exciting electricity sector!
Our recent visit to Transpower New Zealand’s Hamilton Control Centre! Got to see real world power engineering in action, with engineers controlling the nations electricity grid. An awesome opportunity to meet industry professionals and understand what really goes into keeping our country running. Finished off with a stunner of a day at Hamilton Lake for lunch, before heading back up to Auckland.

Transpower is proud to put our name to the joint submission released today from 60+ New Zealand companies calling on Government to improve how it supports businesses to manage health and safety risks. Too many people die, are seriously injured, harmed, or become ill from work in New Zealand. We have a duty to continually improve health and safety at work. Today, alongside 60 other organisations, we’re calling for six recommendations from government to provide businesses with greater clarity for managing health and safety risks and better alignment between key government agencies to do so. Transpower Acting Chief Executive, John Clarke says “It is critical that we continue to drive improvement in health and safety, providing clarity on expectations and requirements across the respective agencies who govern health and safety requirements”.
