Mayor Jacqui Church joined the Te Kauwhata community last week to lay the soil on the first of its kind Community Composting Hub. Funded by the Waikato District Council Waste Levy and led by Para Kore in collaboration with Te Kauwhata Primary School and The CarbonCycle Compost Co Ltd, the hub has now achieved several milestones, including diverting 3,338 litres of food scraps from landfill in under a year! The Community Composting Hub regenerates the soil by returning nutrients back to where they came from, significantly reducing the amount of methane in the environment. Waikato District Council and Para Kore have partnered with Matawhaanui Trust to install another hub in the Kaahui Tuuwaa maara kai–garden in Raahui Pookeka, with additional plans for another hub in Ngaaruawaahia. Check out the photos below and follow the link to learn more about the project! https://ow.ly/kkXw50STv46

Last Thursday, over 20 businesses from Raahui Pookeka/Huntly gathered at the Genesis Energy Function Centre for an energising workforce development event hosted by our Economic and Community Led Development and Strategic Planning teams. Local economist Blair Keenan from the Waikato Regional Council I kicked things off with an engaging presentation that sparked insightful discussions. Attendees, ranging from large to small businesses, eagerly shared ideas and collaborated on community growth. Dr. Melissa Hackell led the interactive “Rosebud” activity, encouraging everyone to explore opportunities and tackle challenges. Thanks to Genesis for sponsoring the venue and to the Waikato Regional Council for their partnership.

Hard work pays off. Our team of planters at this year’s Horotiu School Planting Day take in the efforts of previous years. This year close to 1200 more seedlings were planted to help restore native vegetation. Thanks to all involved for an incredible effort for the seventh successful year, especially teams from Enviroschools, City Care, Cushman and Wakefield, Ngaaruawaahia police, our own crew from Waikato District Council and, of course, the hard-working kids from Horotiu School.
