Extraordinary Council Meeting - Adopt the Annual Report

📣 Hokitika road named in honour of former Westland Mayor Bruce Smith A section of road in Hokitika, from the Beach Street / Gibson Quay intersection to the tip of Sunset Point will now be known as Bruce Smith Drive. Council has formally approved the proposal to rename this section of road after former Mayor Bruce Smith, who passed away last month. Bruce Smith was instrumental in the redevelopment of Sunset Point, observes Mayor Helen Lash. “Sunset Point would not be what it is today without the input, focus and drive of Bruce and that’s a fact." Here's what we learned during the nationwide earthquake drill: Drop, Cover, Hold – three simple actions that save lives in an earthquake. Stay Calm – preparedness helps reduce stress and anxiety during emergencies. Council Meeting

As part of Mental Health Awareness Week at the end of September, our thoughtful Library staff set up a 'pop-up library' until the end of October for the staff in our main Council building. The initiative aims to promote staff well-being through the joy of reading. The library team know that staff don’t always have time to visit the library, so to make it easy, they brought a little bit of the library to them for Mental Health Awareness Week. Whether staff prefer fiction, non-fiction, or a quick read during their break, the selection offers something for everyone. 📚 Reading positively impacts well-being, reducing stress and providing a sense of relaxation and escape. 📚 Research indicates that reading for just six minutes can significantly reduce stress by lowering heart rates and easing muscle tension. 📚 Additionally, reading for pleasure can enhance both personal and professional development by broadening knowledge, improving empathy, and fostering critical thinking skills.
