A point of conversation at last year's #WILNZConference, and even more pertinent given the current cost of living crisis - new academic research by Dr Leighton Watson of University of Canterbury reflects the very real financial implications of students choosing to pursue careers with unpaid placement requirements. Full article available here (https://lnkd.in/gHUBTYyA); some provoking shareable images provided in the post below by Paid Placements Aotearoa NZ #workintegratedlearning #cooperativeeducation #costofliving #paidtraining #studentplacements
💥BREAKING NEWS!💥 New academic research by Dr Watson from the University of Canterbury confirms that unpaid placements have long-term financial implications. 💲For the first 8-12 years of your career (depending on your profession), you would have been better off financially as a minimum wage worker. 💲For the first 14-28 years of your career, your effective cumulative salary is less than a Police officer - who is paid to train, has no debt and no degree. 💲After 20yrs on average, your superannuation will be about a quarter of a Police officers'. 👮♀️Police, prison officers, Customs, and the military are all public services with paid training. They are also male dominated 👮 Paid training can be done because it is being done and it works! 🙌 You can find the full article here: https://lnkd.in/gSZMHV_g Please share this post and let us know what you think in the comments 👇 #paidtraining #nobrainer #everyonewins #sustainable #training #fixworkforceshortagesnow

This week marks O-week for many institutions, and many students may be heading into their first #workintegratedlearning experiences of the year - or ever! While work-integrated learning is a fantastic way for students to have experiences that will prepare them for the world of work, it can be a little shock to the system for some students. Have you prepared support for your WIL students, ensuring they end their WIL experience as shiny and smiley as when they start? Don't know where to begin? There are some great articles on the International Journal of Work-Integrated Learning (www.ijwil.org), including those covering intersectional identities. There are also some fantastic recordings of previous webinars on our #WILNZ Free Webinars page - https://lnkd.in/gjSfhV43 #cooperativeeducation #experientiallearning #studentwellbeing #studentsupport #trainingandeducation

Struggling to explain what Quality WIL is to an academic colleague unfamiliar with the terminology? This infographic could be a really good start!
🌟 What makes work-integrated learning (WIL) truly quality? 🌟 As WIL practitioners, we strive to enhance our programs, but defining "quality" can feel subjective. The research "A Framework to Support Assurance of Institution-Wide Quality in Work-Integrated Learning" offers valuable insights into this challenge. The ACEN Framework (Work-Integrated Learning Australia) identifies four key domains for quality WIL: 1️⃣ The Student Experience Domain: A quality WIL experience should provide students with a scaffolded, connected and supported pedagogical experience. 2️⃣ The Curriculum Design Domain: A quality WIL curriculum should contain embedded, accessible and transformative learning and assessment within an intended and enacted curriculum. 3️⃣ The Institutional Requirements Domain: Quality WIL activity across an institution should be evidenced by the proper management of staff, risk management and reporting around WIL experiences supporting continual improvement. 4️⃣ The Stakeholder Engagement Domain: Quality WIL experiences are supported by engagement, connection and responsiveness to the dynamic expectations of diverse stakeholders (industry, community, government, higher education sector, professional bodies, students). This framework helps institutions evaluate and continually improve their WIL programs through evidence-based standards across all phases of the WIL experience. 📰 Learn more here: https://ow.ly/7BkJ50UOXzF #QualityWIL #WIL #ACEN #Research
