  • The Tasmanian Announcement - great work! Let's hope Aotearoa follows soon. - CRS Let's get it done New Zealand

Today, we celebrate the announcement by the Tasmanian Government’s Minister for Parks and Environment, the Honorable Nick Duigan of TOMRA Cleanaway’s appointment as the sole network operator for the Tasmanian Recycle Rewards Container Refund Scheme (CRS), due to commence mid-2025. Tasmania will be the third jurisdiction where TOMRA Cleanaway will be delivering a convenient and accessible container return network for the Australian community. The appointment as sole network operator is a testament to our commitment to delivering a positive legacy in the areas in which we operate by driving value through recycling. "TOMRA will bring our most modern RVM solutions to Tasmania, developing on our significant experiences operating in the New South Wales, Queensland, Northern Territory, Western Australian and Victorian Container Refund Schemes. Our solutions are tailored to ensure we utilize our in-depth knowledge of the Australian market to drive maximum uptime, recycling outcomes and sustainability benefits” said Tor Eirik Knutsen, President of TOMRA Collection Asia Pacific. • This is great news and the culmination of a lot of hard work by TOMRA Cleanaway and Tasmanians. This will be the last state in Australia to implement a Deposit Return Scheme all of which use TOMRA technology. In Aotearoa we are yet to see the excellent CRS proposed (and shelved by the last administration) implemented - if it is we can safely assume that Oceania would be leading the word in eliminating Single Use Beverage containers going to landfill or polluting the environment - CRS Let's get it done New Zealand!

We’ve taught our machines to see like human eyes, and it’s revolutionizing the recycling industry. 💡 How do you recognize if a packaging has been in contact with food? As a human being, you can use your eyes to look for context, as well as shape or size of the packaging. A pizza carton, for example, has a distinct and memorable design, making it easy for us to identify and sort it out of a waste stream. But to achieve efficient automation in recycling facilities, we need machines to do the same. That’s why we have trained our AI-powered technology GAINnext™, using millions of images, providing context to each of them. That’s the idea behind deep learning. With this ability, we can now automate sorting tasks that once required manual effort, enabling recyclers to process larger quantities of materials quickly and efficiently. #Packaging 💡Bottle caps are among the top five items found at coastal cleanups, but consumers in Europe are seeing a difference in drink packaging design, aimed at changing all that. As of July 2024, the EU's Single-Use Plastics Directive now requires that single-use beverage containers under 3 liters have caps that stay attached during use and storage. This small change makes a big difference, ensuring that bottle caps are easier to recycle. 🧴 Designed to reduce litter: Bottle caps are one of the most common litter items. Tethered bottle caps help prevent them from becoming litter, keeping our beaches and communities cleaner. 🐬 Protecting marine wildlife: Loose plastic caps pose a serious risk to marine life. By keeping them connected to bottles, we help ensure they don’t end up in the ocean, protecting our precious marine ecosystems. ♻️ Circular economy in action: True circularity in plastics starts with smart design. When products are made to be easily collected, sorted, and recycled, we’re taking meaningful steps toward a more sustainable, circular future. TOMRA is also committed to design-for-recycling principles. Curious to learn more about circular design? • I love this! Textiles are a huge contributor to landfills and there are a number of innovative people doing something about it, people like ImpacTex and Mindful Fashions to name just two - this new technology will make the recycling of textiles easier, faster and more cost effective than current manual sorting.
