Jessica Gadirova was born in Dublin to Azerbaijani parents who had moved temporarily to Ireland from London. Aged six, she and twin sister Jennifer started out in gymnastics with both going on to win medals at Olympic Games and World Championships.
Jessica Gadirova: A European breakthrough
Jessica Gadirova won a number of competitions as a junior before joining the senior ranks at 19 in 2020.
The COVID-19 pandemic delayed her international debut but she quickly made up for lost time with three medals - including floor gold - at the 2021 European Championships in Basel, Switzerland.
Jessica Gadirova: Olympic medallist for Team GB
Despite her lack of senior international experience, Gadirova was named to Great Britain's Olympic team for the delayed Tokyo 2020 Games alongside sister Jennifer.
In Tokyo, she made the all-around and floor finals and helped Great Britain qualify for the team final. Jessica Gadirova excelled on vault and floor in the team final as Britain took bronze, the nation's first medal in the competition since Amsterdam 1928. She was 10th in the all-around and took fifth place on floor.
Jessica Gadirova: A continental star
Having established herself as Britain's top gymnast in 2022, she helped Team GB win silver at the European Championships in Munich before retaining her floor title.
It was a big year for British gymnastics with Liverpool hosting the World Championships. And Gadirova did not disappoint as she took all-around bronze, becoming first British athlete to win a global all-around medal.
After leading the hosts to silver, Britain's best ever team performance at Worlds, she delighted the home fans by winning gold on floor to emulate Beth Tweddle's 2009 success. Those three medals helped her secure the 2022 BBC Young Sports Personality of the Year award.
More success followed at the 2023 European Championships as Britain claimed a first team gold medal. Gadirova also won her first European all-around crown and became the first woman to win three consecutive European floor titles.
However, Gadirova suffered a major setback at the 2023 World Championships when she suffered a complete tear of her anterior cruciate knee ligament while warming up for the all-around final in Antwerp, leaving her facing a race against time to be fit for Paris 2024.
