In the unique context of Peru, the significance of conversations surrounding Food and Climate Justice has never been more pronounced. As a nation blessed with diverse ecosystems, rich agricultural heritage, and environmental challenges, addressing these issues is of paramount importance. With a growing awareness of the intricate relationship between food production and its impact on climate, it is imperative that we, as a society, recognize the need to foster sustainable practices. Peru’s incredible biodiversity, from the Amazon rainforest to the Andes mountains, makes it particularly vulnerable to the effects of climate change. Rising temperatures, altered precipitation patterns, and other environmental shifts are directly affecting food security and the livelihoods of many Peruvians. This calls for an urgent need to engage in meaningful conversations and take decisive actions to ensure food and climate justice for the nation. Now, more than ever, individuals, communities, and organizations in Peru must come together to discuss, understand, and advocate for sustainable agriculture, responsible land use, and environmentally conscious policies. By addressing the intersection of food and climate justice, we can pave the way for a healthier, more sustainable future in our beloved Peru.

Join us for a hybrid lunchtime community meeting on November 14, 2023, from 12-2 PM to learn about SB 1000, how Richmond has been implementing the law within its new Environmental Justice element, and what further steps can be taken to expand access to healthy fresh foods for all. Berkeley Food Institute’s faculty directors, Dr. Charisma Acey and Dr. Susana Matias, and recent Master of City Planning graduate Katherine Fallon, conducted research to track city and county efforts to design and implement equitable food access policies. Now, we’re taking their research on the road with our first stop at CoBiz Richmond, Inc. We welcome critical perspectives from Richmond residents, local elected representatives, city staff, and community organizations that work to secure good food access for the people of Richmond. Lunch will be provided at this hybrid meeting. Sign up here: https://ow.ly/r2UR50PZU8H.
