LGP is a USAID program promoting biodiversity conservation and women's empowerment in Papua New Guinea
About us
Papua New Guinea’s (PNG) biodiversity is among the world’s richest – and most at-risk. This rich biodiversity is fundamentally important to the long-term well-being of its population. But it is threatened by weak regulation of natural resource use and development. The PNG Lukautim Graun Program (LGP) funded by the US Agency for International Development (USAID) and implemented by DT Global, is working to reduce the primary drivers and threats to biodiversity in PNG by strengthening the management of customary lands, and focusing on areas with an exceptional variety of terrestrial and marine life. The program also incorporates livelihood programming under the White House’s Women’s Global Development and Prosperity Initiative (W-GDP).

As part of USAID's ongoing commitment to supporting environmental conservation efforts in Papua New Guinea, the USAID Lukautim Graun Program (LGP) successfully organized an IIMS/ArcGIS Virtual Training on October 22, 2024. This training marks a significant step toward enhancing the capacity of the Conservation and Environment Protection Authority (CEPA) to utilize cutting-edge geospatial technology for more effective management of the country’s natural resources. The training, held at the CEPA office, featured ArcGIS Online Enterprise software, procured through USAID PNG LGP support, alongside various training modules aimed at CEPA staff, including key representatives from the Wildlife Trade & Enforcement Branch, Marine and Terrestrial Protected Areas, and ICT departments. This initiative is part of a five-year roll-out plan to strengthen the use of GIS for environmental monitoring and enforcement in PNG. David Sean Burt, Director of USAID’s Environment Office, commended the CEPA team for their commitment, referring to them as "champions" who will spearhead sustainable conservation efforts in the country. This training was conducted virtually by ESRI, with participants gaining hands-on experience with critical applications like ArcGIS Field Maps, Survey 123, and QuickCapture for field data collection and management. This initiative supports USAID PNG LGP's focus on capacity building and long-term sustainability, ensuring that PNG’s conservation bodies are equipped with the tools and skills to address evolving environmental challenges. USAID’s ongoing support further includes potential contributions from other donor-funded projects, reflecting a collaborative approach to environmental protection.

Great news for conservation efforts in Papua New Guinea! Nine Tangguar clans from Malas Village, Madang Province, have signed a Conservation Deed to protect 17,803 hectares of vital forest and marine resources. This community-driven initiative, backed by USAID through the PNG Lukautim Graun Program (LGP) in partnership with The Nature Conservancy, is a significant milestone in sustainable development. The Conservation Deed covers 45% of the community’s land, including 16,311 hectares of forest and 1,492 hectares of marine areas. Through local partnerships and support from civil society organizations, this initiative exemplifies how grassroots leadership can drive long-term conservation and economic resilience. USAID has provided the Tangguar clans with training in community-based natural resource management, financial literacy, legal education, gender equality, and organizational development. The initiative showcases the power of localization and the importance of empowering communities to manage their resources sustainably. This success is an inspiring example of what can be achieved when local communities take ownership of their natural resources. It's a model that can inspire sustainable development and conservation efforts across Papua New Guinea. USAID LGP: Milestone Achievements and Future Directions Since its inception in 2019, USAID’s Papua New Guinea Lukautim Graun Program (LGP), implemented by DT Global has been a pivotal force in biodiversity conservation and community development within the Bismarck Forest Corridor Provinces—Madang, Morobe, Eastern Highlands, Simbu, and Jiwaka. The program has emerged as a leading model for sustainable development in Papua New Guinea, reflecting USAID's long-term commitment to the country’s natural landscapes and communities. Over the past five years, LGP has made substantial advancements in addressing critical environmental challenges. Key achievements include: · Establishment of Protected Areas: The program has facilitated the creation of new protected areas, contributing to the conservation of vital forest ecosystems and endangered species. · Reduction in Deforestation: Through targeted interventions and sustainable land management practices, LGP has significantly reduced rates of deforestation in the region. · Support for Alternative Livelihoods: The program has introduced and supported alternative livelihoods, which have helped reduce pressure on natural resources and improved the economic well-being of local communities. USAID LGP's operational strategy integrates traditional knowledge with modern conservation practices, ensuring that local communities play a central role in environmental decision-making. The program has fostered strong partnerships with community-based and women’s organizations, enhancing its effectiveness in promoting sustainable resource management and gender equity. As USAID LGP approaches its fifth anniversary, a three-day Pause and Reflection Workshop was conducted from August 14 to 16, 2024, in Port Moresby. This workshop served as a critical platform to evaluate the program’s successes and challenges, and to outline objectives for the upcoming two-year extension. The extension aims to sustain and build upon the program’s achievements, with a continued focus on strengthening community capacity, advancing conservation efforts, and addressing emerging issues such as climate change. The USAID LGP continues to set a high standard in marine and terrestrial biodiversity conservation, gender equity, and livelihood development. Its impact underscores the program's role as a model for sustainable progress in Papua New Guinea, reinforcing its commitment to preserving the country’s unique biodiversity and enhancing the livelihoods of its people.
