We're calling on the government to step up and commit to a total ban on the advertising of online gambling. Australians lose many, many billions of dollars each year in gambling, which takes an enormous toll on people and their loved ones. We need to put the wellbeing of Australians ahead of the profits of predatory corporations and stop the normalisation of online gambling among Australians. A partial ban is no ban at all. The federal government's review into private hospital viability is a critical opportunity to highlight priorities for reform. AMA President Professor Steve Robson spoke to ABC 7.30 about the issues affecting the private health sector. As insurers continue to make large profits, more money as a proportion of premiums paid must go towards improving patient outcomes. Significant reform is needed to ensure food is labelled responsibly and Australians are encouraged to make healthier choices. The AMA supports these calls to make health star ratings mandatory. The AMA also continues to call for a tax on sugar-sweetened beverages. This is an essential policy that would drive down sugar consumption and reduce the prevalence of chronic disease, including type 2 diabetes.
