The U.S. Department of Education has released its AI Toolkit for K-12 leaders. Our Director of Wellbeing, Teodora Pavkovic, shares her thoughts on the brand new guidance. "The newly-released AI Toolkit covers an impressive amount of ground, while also being incredibly practical. With over 60 conversation starters and discussion questions, an appendix of real-world scenarios, and a section dedicated to "Building a Strategy for AI Integration," the 74-page document should alleviate worries for districts who have been understandably hesitant to declare a position on AI as of yet. As we've seen from the recent lawsuit in Massachusetts, ambiguity around AI's acceptable role in schools can be seriously problematic. Districts should trust their instincts in wanting to remain flexible as AI tools develop, while recognizing the importance of communicating policies and expectations around how these tools should be used." This year’s World Mental Health Day is putting a spotlight on the theme of prioritizing mental health in the workplace. In the world of children's online safety, we focus much of our attention on student wellbeing—but if our educators aren’t doing well, we can’t expect our students to thrive either. Here are some simple things K-12 leaders can do to support mental health of your staff in the workplace: 💙 Make it part of your school culture: Openly discuss mental health as a component of overall health among both staff and students. 💚 Communicate: Remind staff of the support and resources available, so they know how and where to get help. 💙 Encourage peer-to-peer support: Create opportunities for groups to come together to run sessions, or share what has worked for them. 💚 Empower your staff: Support teachers and faculty with resources that save time and minimize admin work. 💙 Lead by example: Normalize having a healthy work-life balance by "walking the walk."
