The Fred Hollows Foundation is inspired by the work of the late Professor Fred Hollows (1929-1993). Working in more than 25 countries, our vision is for a world where no one is needlessly blind, and Indigenous Australians enjoy the same health and life expectancy as other Australians. Fred believed local people were best placed to deliver health care to their communities. The Foundation seeks to strengthen and sustain local systems, both internationally and in our Indigenous Australia Program. We're aligning strategies and goals to foster innovation and inspire the sector to embrace bold, self-determined leadership from Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities. "The Foundation is proud to partner with the First Nations Eye Health Alliance to elevate the voice of community control and advocacy to promote and improve eye health access and services to the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community," our Indigenous Australia Program Director Vincent Bin Dol said. This is a milestone in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander led eye health, reflecting self-determination and creating new opportunities for collaboration with other stakeholders committed to allyship and empowerment. Our Joint Statement commits to enhancing our collaboration to address current challenges and seize opportunities in eye health. ⏰The countdown is on to the announcement of the Pilbara Challenge winner⏰ Lions Outback Vision has made it to the final ten of the Government of Western Australia's Pilbara Challenge, which is a global challenge for a world-leading medical research and innovation solution to resolve the pressing problem of health service delivery in the Pilbara region. Each finalist has spent the last 12 months progressing their health solution to the proof-of-concept stage and the best solution will take home a $5 million prize supported by the Government of Western Australia's partners, the Future Health Research and Innovation Fund, Rio Tinto and BHP. This is the most incredible movement to be a part of. On International Allyship Day Allies for Uluru and the Woolyungah Indigenous Centre at the University of Wollongong held the inaugural National Allyship Summit. The day brought together Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander and non-Indigenous people from across the country to discuss the path forward for the Uluru Statement from the Heart. It was a day full of solidarity, inspiration and hope. To my colleagues at Allies for Uluru and Woolyungah Indigenous Centre - working with you on this event has been an absolute privilege and a highlight of my career. To all the speakers, and leadership of the The Uluru Statement from the Heart - Uluru Dialogue (Official) - thank you for your generosity in sharing your time, energy and knowledge, and for trusting us to carry your messages forward. The Covid-19 pandemic showed us how fragile eye health systems can be and how it widens existing inequities. We are comitted to helping clear the backlog in cataract surgery and other eye health services that was created during the pandemic, and helping strengthen health systems to build resilience against future shocks. We are working closely with our partners to address these inequities, especially for women and girls, and to secure the necessary funding to meet these critical challenges.
