At least 93 Palestinians were killed or missing and dozens wounded in an Israeli strike on a residential building in the northern Gaza town of Beit Lahiya on Tuesday, the Gaza health ministry said, and the U.S. called the incident “horrifying”. Medics said at least 20 children were among the dead. “A number of victims are still under the rubble and on the roads, and ambulance and civil defence crews cannot reach them,” the territory’s health ministry said in a statement. Later on Tuesday, Ismail Al-Thawabta, director of the Gaza government media office, put the number of fatalities at 93. There was no immediate Israeli comment. The Israeli military has frequently questioned figures on death toll published by the Hamas-run media office, saying they were often exaggerated. Israel’s main ally the United States said it was concerned by the high casualty toll, with State Department spokesperson Matthew Miller calling it a “horrifying incident with a horrifying result”. U.S. officials have reached out to the Israeli government to ask what happened, Miller told reporters, adding he was aware of reports that many of the dead were children. #Israeli #strike #kills #scores #north #Gaza #residential #block #US #deems #horrifying #loan #ADB #Pakistan #247newsupdate

MANILA: The Asian Development Bank (ADB) approved a US$500 million policy-based loan to support climate change and disaster risk reduction and resilience in Pakistan. In a statement issued here, the ADB maintained that the Climate and Disaster Resilience Enhancement Program (CDREP) will strengthen Pakistan’s institutional capacity for planning, preparedness, and response; increase inclusive investment in disaster risk reduction and climate resilience; and support the scale up of disaster risk financing using a risk-layered approach. “This program builds on ADB’s longstanding work in Pakistan to understand and reduce climate and disaster risks and support effective disaster response,” said ADB Director General for Central and West Asia Yevgeniy Zhukov. “We are proud to support an integrated and comprehensive approach to climate and disaster risk management, including a portfolio of disaster risk financing instruments for timely and adequate funding for disaster response.” The program supports enhanced capacity for disaster risk mapping and modeling for investment and development decisions. It enhances coordination for disaster monitoring and response. It supports enhanced planning and prioritization of gender-sensitive and resilient public investments, including integrated flood risk management and nature-based solutions. “This includes issuance of a domestic green sukuk (Islamic bond). A key innovation of the program is the use of ADB’s Contingent Disaster Financing option for the first time in the Central and West Asia region,” the ADB maintained. It added that the program will provide quick disbursing budget support in the event of a disaster. The program will support the establishment of a solidarity fund to facilitate the uptake of risk transfer solutions such as agriculture insurance. “The program also supports shock-responsive social protection to deliver cash assistance in the event of a disaster,” the statement read. #ADB #authorizes #million #loan #Pakistan #247newsupdate

McDonald’s executives on Tuesday brushed off a potential sales hit from the deadly E. coli outbreak in the U.S., saying that the fast-food giant was past the incident and was looking to revive muted demand through promotions and value menu items. Shares of the company reversed course to trade up about 2% in early trading. They had fallen about 2% premarket after the company reported a bigger-than-expected drop in global comparable sales but a quarterly profit beat. Last week, McDonald’s temporarily paused serving Quarter Pounders in a fifth of its 14,000 U.S. restaurants due to an outbreak that has killed at least one person. Shares had declined nearly 7% last week as infections rose to 75 people. Quarter Pounders were being added back to the menu this week. CEO Chris Kempczinski apologized to customers for the outbreak on a post-earnings call on Tuesday, and said the situation appears to be contained and he was “confident in the safety of eating at McDonald’s.” “The most significant events are behind us and the work to do right now is focused on restoring consumer confidence, getting our U.S. business back to that strong momentum,” McDonald’s CFO Ian Borden said on the call. McDonald’s reaffirmed most of its annual targets including its operating margin, accounting for no material impact from the E. coli outbreak. The company, however, admitted that it was trying to reverse the daily negative guest count and sales since the beginning of the outbreak. “We think investors will be willing to give the company the benefit of doubt about the impact from the E. coli issue given its handling to date,” M Science analyst Matthew Goodman said. U.S. sales were a bright spot. In the quarter ended Sept. 30, U.S. comparable sales grew 0.3%, reversing the previous quarter’s drop, aided by promotions. Weakness in the industry has prompted fast-food chains including McDonald’s, Wendy’s, Burger King and Taco Bell to lean into meal bundles and limited-time offers in a bid to revive traffic, especially among lower-income customers. #McDonald's #dismisses #EColi #outbreak's #negative #impact #sales #247newsupdate

THE HAGUE, Netherlands: A global police operation shut down the servers of one of the world’s largest malware platforms that targeted millions of victims, the EU’s judicial arm said on Tuesday. “The infostealers taken down … targeted millions of victims worldwide, making it one of the largest malware platforms globally,” Eurojust said in a statement. “Authorities discovered that over 1,200 servers in dozens of countries were running the malware,” said the agency, which is based in The Hague. Called “Operation Magnus” investigators shut down three servers in the Netherlands, seized two domains, unsealed charges in the United States and took two people into custody in Belgium, Eurojust said. The criminal platforms, called RedLine and META stole personal data from infected devices including usernames and passwords as well as automatically saved data like addresses, email addresses and crypto-currency wallets. “After retrieving the personal data, the infostealers sold the information to other criminals through criminal market places,” Eurojust said. “The criminals who purchased the personal data used it to steal money, crypto-currency and to carry out follow-on hacking activities,” the agency said. Eurojust and Dutch police confirmed that the META name used by the malware platform had no link with Meta, the California-based company that owns Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp. Investigations continued and Eurojust said a private security company has set up an online tool for potential victims to check if their data was stolen. #Global #police #broke #down #malware #organization #targeting #millions #rates #247newsupdate
