Food Entrepreneurship seminar held at UO A seminar on Food and Nutrition Entrepreneurship was organized by the University of Okara’s (UO) Department of Food Science & Technology and Department of Human Nutrition & Dietetics. The speakers at the seminar discussed various business options and opportunities for the young entrepreneurs, especially the graduates of food sciences and human nutrition. The event started with the welcome note by the Pro Vice Chancellor, Prof Dr Muhammad Wajid, who spoke on behalf of the VC, Prof Dr Javaid Akhtar. Prof Wajid welcomed the guest speakers as saying, “Today we have gathered here a community of innovators, educators and students with an approach the explore the latest trends, best practices and emerging opportunities in the field of food entrepreneurship.” The Chief Guest of the seminar was Dr Mian Kamran Sharif from University of Agriculture Faisalabad (UAF). Addressing to the participants, he talked about the diet diversity and entrepreneurship. He urged the students to work on value addition into their knowledge and develop innovative business ideas to develop and sell certain food items by the use of digital technologies. Dr Adnan Mukhtar from the UAF presented his research on development of new products from potato flesh and peels. He displayed how potato peels could be used to make cookies for the diabetic patients and cereals for children. Hina Rafiq, Clinical Nutritionist at DHQ Okara, discussed the role of nutritionists in entrepreneurship. She told the participants how they could prevent diseases with health food choices. She also shared a business idea of customized food products. Tahira Kalsoom, Food Safety Officer at Punjab Food Authority, shared her experiences of ensuring food safety through string operations the imposition of stringent measures at food points. The organizers of the event Dr Sabiha Abbas and Dr Shahzad Iqbal also talked to the students and goaded them to initiate business ideas instead of looking for jobs during and after the completion of their degrees.
