We all suffer from an optimism bias, the “It won’t happen to me” syndrome, until it does. According to recent estimates more than 10,000 traffic accidents took place in the country, 80% of which involved two-wheelers. This number does not reflect many minor accidents that go unreported. While we at Unilever Pakistan, along with many other responsible organizations, provide road safety trainings to our employees to ensure all precautionary measures are being taken. We felt this wasn’t enough and we needed reactive modelling to reduce fatalities if an accident does happen. For that we needed to check the efficacy of our safety gear. Our team in collaboration with @Automotive Design and Crashworthiness Research carried out rigidity tests on various kinds of helmets available in the market only to find out that none of them met international safety standards. This came as a major setback to our safety commitments because while we were training our riders to wear helmets, we now know that those helmets weren’t effective in protecting them from fatal injuries. We decided to take this challenge head on and locally produce helmets that meet all international safety standards. It wasn’t an easy commitment; it took our teams 2 years to come up with a design that was not only effective in preventing fatal head injuries but also priced market competitively. In addition to the impressive safety features, these helmets are also GPS-enabled, which adds another layer of protection for the wearer. The GPS can monitor the rider's speed, detect if the helmet is being worn, and even send an SOS message in the the event of a crash. Additionally, the helmet can provide wrong-way alerts, further enhancing the rider's safety on the road. Importantly, these helmets are PSQCA approved, ensuring they meet the highest safety standards in Pakistan. With GPS enabled helmets, riders can also benefit from dashboard analytics and route monitoring. This allows riders to track their progress, monitor performance metrics like speed and distance, and view their route history. This data can be valuable for improving riding efficiency and safety. We now feel secure having provided our teams, on two-wheelers, helmets that can actually save lives and I invite more responsible changemakers to partner with us in ensuring that everyone gets to wear good quality safety gear and reduce fatalities in accidents. #RoadSafety #UnileverForPakistan
