June 2024 marks a very concerning milestone for our planet as 𝗘𝗮𝗿𝘁𝗵'𝘀 𝟭𝟯𝘁𝗵 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘀𝗲𝗰𝘂𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗿𝗲𝗰𝗼𝗿𝗱-𝘄𝗮𝗿𝗺 𝗺𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗵. This unprecedented warming trend is a stark reminder of the urgent need for climate action. Over the past 12 months (July 2023 – June 2024), the global-average temperature has reached its highest on record, standing at 0.76°C above the 1991-2020 average and a concerning 1.64°C above the 1850-1900 pre-industrial average. Heatwaves have swept across a large number of countries on all continents including Pakistan, impacting millions of lives and ecosystems. Latest research now also indicates that climate change is fundamentally impacting the Earth’s core. As global warming causes polar and glacial ice to melt, water previously concentrated at the poles is now shifting toward the equator. This redistribution of mass around the Earth’s centre is slowing its rotation, resulting in longer days. Additionally, these changes in water distribution are contributing to shifts in the Earth’s gravitational field, further affecting the planet’s dynamics. https://lnkd.in/dQTDF3dE Even today, many policymakers and decision-makers remain unaware that heat is the leading cause of mortality worldwide. The number of deaths attributed to heat is staggering. 𝗨𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗿𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗻𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗪𝗲𝘁 𝗕𝘂𝗹𝗯 𝗘𝗳𝗳𝗲𝗰𝘁: 𝗔 𝗛𝗶𝗱𝗱𝗲𝗻 𝗗𝗮𝗻𝗴𝗲𝗿 𝗼𝗳 𝗖𝗹𝗶𝗺𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗖𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗴𝗲 Climate change is more than just an environmental issue; it is an 𝗲𝘅𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗮𝗹 𝗰𝗿𝗶𝘀𝗶𝘀. Heatwaves are worsening many times faster than any other type of extreme weather events because of the climate crisis. While rising temperatures are often discussed, there's another critical factor that deserves our attention: rising humidity levels. Rising temperatures and humidity levels create the '𝘄𝗲𝘁 𝗯𝘂𝗹𝗯 𝗲𝗳𝗳𝗲𝗰𝘁,' a term that is not understood by most people. Humans regulate their internal body temperature by sweating. The wet bulb temperature combines heat and humidity to indicate when the human body can no longer cool itself by sweating. Wet bulb temperatures beyond 31.5°C pose severe health risks, with 35°C being potentially fatal after prolonged exposure, regardless of shade or water intake. Recent research suggests our tolerance levels could be much lower. 𝙒𝙝𝙮 𝙞𝙨 𝙘𝙡𝙞𝙢𝙖𝙩𝙚 𝙘𝙝𝙖𝙣𝙜𝙚 𝙘𝙖𝙪𝙨𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙧𝙞𝙨𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙝𝙪𝙢𝙞𝙙𝙞𝙩𝙮 𝙡𝙚𝙫𝙚𝙡𝙨? As global temperatures rise, the atmosphere holds more moisture, increasing humidity levels. This creates a dangerous cycle where higher temperatures lead to higher humidity, exacerbating heat stress on human bodies. Globally, 30% of people are exposed to lethal humid heat, which could reach 50% by 2100. Extreme humid heat frequency has more than doubled since 1979. Humid tropical areas, including monsoon belts, are most vulnerable and fast approaching the 35°C threshold. Pakistan exemplifies these impacts. This summer, a large part of the southern regions of the country have recorded wet bulb temperatures exceeding 35°C, posing severe health risks. Power outages, high energy prices, and poverty worsen the situation, leaving many without cooling technologies during critical times. Continued greenhouse gas emissions will make these conditions more frequent and widespread. Immediate action is needed, including stronger climate policies, sustainable technology investments, better urban planning, public health strategies, early-warning systems, and emergency response protocols.
