Helping nonprofits increase sustainable Institutional Giving revenue | Nonprofit Consultant and Advisor
I’m going to admit myself into a clinic. A couple of months ago a friend and I were on a walk when he shared this news and that he’d be away for about 6 weeks. For mental health reasons, he was checking into an inpatient clinic. - He was going through a divorce And felt lost. I think many of us can relate to needing a break. And to feeling lost. Life’s complexities can feel overwhelming. And we are forced to process them while wading through non-stop responsibilities. Yet, we continue forward without pausing to recalibrate. About a year ago, I too sensed a shift within myself, and realized I needed to scale back. And I did. Including being off LinkedIn. It may have been one small action, but one, that over time, resulted in a compound effect Opening space for other things I needed to focus on. When you realize you can’t be all things to everyone, and be everywhere at the same time (though we still try our hardest) You prioritize accordingly. Sometimes we realize it early enough and make the shift, redirecting our energy and time. Sometimes we realize it only when we’re so far in that we need support (like my friend). But I do know this. His 11 year old son will know two things: (1) That it’s ok to ask for help (2) How to get it Let’s normalize mental health needs. And The Pause. Most people will come back stronger for it. #mentalhealth #leadership Image: A man (presumably a father) carrying a boy (presumably his son) on his shoulder, strolling down a sidewalk on a sunny afternoon.

Did you know 72% of entrepreneurs face mental health challenges—far more than the 48% of non-entrepreneurs, according to the National Institute of Mental Health? Starting your own business might feel like a dream come true... But the reality? It’s often a tough, winding road. Running a small business can be incredibly rewarding, but it can also be incredibly stressful. This stress can leave you feeling overwhelmed, exhausted, and stuck in 𝘀𝘂𝗿𝘃𝗶𝘃𝗮𝗹 𝗺𝗼𝗱𝗲—a state where your mind starts working against you. When you're in this *survival* mode, it can quietly sabotage your well-being, performance, and relationships—𝗼𝗳𝘁𝗲𝗻 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗻 𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗹𝗶𝘇𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗶𝘁. But here’s the good news: just like building physical strength, you can develop mental strength—also known as **𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗮𝗹 𝗳𝗶𝘁𝗻𝗲𝘀𝘀**. 𝗪𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗮 𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗼𝗻𝗴𝗲𝗿 𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗱, you’ll tackle daily challenges with more ease and confidence. When you 𝗲𝘅𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗹𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘀 and approach your day with 𝗰𝗮𝗹𝗺 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗿𝗼𝗹, your 𝗲𝗻𝗲𝗿𝗴𝘆 𝗹𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗹𝘀 𝗿𝗶𝘀𝗲. Here’s how I use tapping to handle my stress. I create a hyper specific set up statement while tapping the side of my hand and say something like: “Even though I have all these overwhelming thoughts, I accept myself in this moment. Even though this upcoming deadline is stressing me out, I accept myself. Even though I have no clue how to stay focused on getting this job done, I accept this is where I am” Then move to the reminder phrases while tapping the points: "This overwhelming feeling, this stress I feel in my body" etc All while feeling the stress. Where is it in your body? What does it feel like? Does it have a texture or a color? What we’re doing here is exposure and cognitive therapy. We’re facing the problem head on, accepting it for what it is, and letting it go. Allowing the emotion to be there, getting curious with it, then letting it go. One round takes about 2-3 minutes. (Tapping 8 acupressure points). It’s extremely simple and unusually quick to manage stress. Tapping is like psychological acupuncture without the needles. It’s a somatic stress reduction technique that has over 300 studies done showing its effectiveness across various ailments like chronic pain, anxiety, depression, PTSD, genocide, and more. Try it out for yourself! Tell me what you think. I bet you're even just a tiny bit more relaxed now, aren't you 😉 That's because tapping deactivates the amygdala, where fight or flight hangs out. You are quite literally tapping away your stress. Implementing stress management strategies in the workplace doesn't have to be difficult. Tapping is easy, efficient, accessible, and gives you more focused time back.

I’m going to post something a little unusual for me.. I am not married I work for myself, and I have no plans to have children I’ve never imagined being a bride, playing with sheets as imaginary veils or carrying baby dolls around as a kid. I made a pact with myself that I would commit to my college education before I’d commit to dating seriously. I was there for school, not to find a partner. My aunt even said at my sister’s wedding, “We won’t have one of these for you, right?” like it was a given. But women continue to carry the burden of the home and workplace, whether they have children, are married, or not. And as a woman, my choices are mine and don't mean that I: ❌ Want to work long days because I don’t have a family to come home to. ❌ Want to explain my decisions to you because they don’t align with social norms. ❌ Can’t set an excellent model for young people who don’t want to pursue the ‘traditional’ path. And my belief is that it is completely okay to not want to be a mother. While I want to interject here and say that I totally support mothers who are doing. absolutely. everything. I just wanted to respond to the recent rumblings that if you’re 34, unmarried, and don’t want children that you’ve got it wrong. I once had a dear friend ask me, “Then what’s the point?” when I told her that I didn’t want to have children. And in my shock I didn’t have a witty response. But my answer is: 👉🏼 Because it’s not want I want for myself. And I shouldn’t be made to feel bad for that. I read the Newsweek article about Taylor Swift being a bad role model (which I have not linked in the comments because perhaps it was just clickbait) but thanks to Samantha McKenna for bringing it to my attention in her equally and rightfully irate post about it (which *is* linked in the comments for reference). Like WHY are we still having these discussions? WHY are people still commenting on the choices we make over our own bodies? WHY can't we live lives the way we want to that aren't hurting anyone, without others feeling like they can comment on, judge, and/or take advantage of them? I don’t often get political on here, but come on.. This election year has the potential to be REAL scary for all of us that aren’t white males, so here’s my one plea to take care of and look out for those in your life who have a whole governing body thinking they can make decisions on our behalf. The same people that think they can make us feel bad or less-than for choosing to live the lives we want for ourselves. Because we can be and ARE amazing models in our communities, and we don’t need your sanction. Thanks 💟 #lyndseeloves #taylorswift

Deciding to post something on here after a very, very long time: Things have changed a lot for me over the past two-three years... I used to love posting here about work, motivation, public health, research, and many other topics; but with time and experience, I realized that I never really liked these things after all. I cannot tolerate the level of unrealistic posts on here (and other social media platforms)—how we are always aiming for success, the best jobs, the highest salaries, the most credible universities, the famous people we are meeting, the social events we are attending, and much more. We are always competing on here, and for what? Why can't we post more about the losses, the failures, the challenges? Why can't we be more real and genuine? I just don't really care anymore about things that are superficial, capitalist, and all other western ideologies that brainwash us throughout our lives. We are taught growing up to strive for perfection, something that does not exist and never will. I just do not want to take part in the trends anymore. What matters to me is so different now: what matters to me is love, kindness, genuine connections, safe spaces, acceptance, freedom, nature, art, and creativity. Can such things be sold or marketed? I do not think so. Wars, genocides, poverty, racism, sexism, classism, ageism, and so much more hate speech—things that I am sure most of us witness everyday -- all made me curious to explore sociology, feminism, and many other decolonial studies and research that opened up so many doors I did not know existed in me. So things made so much sense... I am now driven by genuine love, kindness, empathy, creativity, open-mindedness, and self-awareness... Things have changed, but I guess I feel more connected now with my human values... Thanks for reading this long post! #genuine #realness #change #love #kindness #whynot?
