    Chairman HEC Terms Governance & Quality Assurance as Key Challenges of Higher Education Sector Chairman HEC Dr. Mukhtar Ahmed has emphasized that governance and quality assurance are crucial challenges facing Pakistan's higher education sector. He has underlined the need for immediate action from university leaders, faculty, and government departments to improve governance, which is vital for enhancing education and research quality. While talking to media persons along with Executive Director HEC Zia Ul-Qayyum and other senior management, Dr. Ahmed acknowledged the sector's progress over the past two decades, thanks to HEC's focus on faculty development, research promotion, infrastructure development, technological readiness, capacity building, etc. He called for increased funding from federal and provincial governments to support the growing number of universities. He also stressed the importance of aligning research with societal needs and ensuring universities prepare students for the digital age through updated IT systems. HEC's commitment to quality education, ensuring IT readiness and sports development was also highlighted.     HEC has approved funding for 23 travel grants and 17 academic events during its 21st Travel Grant/Seminar Conferences Management Committee meeting held at HEC Islamabad on October 8, 2024. Out of 50 applications for travel grants, the committee recommended 23, and all 17 requests for seminar and conference funding were approved. The meeting, chaired by Prof. Dr. Anwar-ul-Hassan Gilani, brought together several prominent figures from the academic sector, including Prof. Dr. Shahid Mehmood Baig, Prof. Fayyaz Ul Hassan Sahi, and Prof. Dr. Hazir Ullah. Prof. Dr. Muhammad Umar joined the session online, while Muhammad Javed Iqbal, Director (Research & Innovation Division), served as the meeting’s secretary. HEC’s Research & Innovation Division continues to play a crucial role in promoting research culture in Pakistan, providing opportunities for scholars to present their work on national and international platforms. Through initiatives like the Research Travel Grant Fund and support for organizing academic events, HEC is helping universities and researchers gain global recognition for their contributions to knowledge and socio-economic development.

    Dr Mukhtar Ahmed, Chairman of the Higher Education Commission (HEC), met with H.E. Ms. Mary O'Neill, Ambassador of Ireland to Pakistan, accompanied by a delegation from Education in Ireland, including representatives from University College Dublin, the National University of Ireland, and Dublin City University. The meeting aimed to explore opportunities for continued collaboration between the two countries in the higher education sector. Ambassador O'Neill, the first resident Irish Ambassador to Pakistan, briefed the Chairman on the opening of the first Irish Embassy in Pakistan and expressed appreciation for the contributions of the Pakistani community in Ireland, particularly in medicine and social services. Chairman Ahmed reaffirmed HEC's commitment to strengthening educational partnerships with Ireland, emphasizing the recognition of qualifications, faculty and student mobility, the creation of scholarship opportunities for Pakistani students, and collaboration in joint research projects addressing shared challenges like climate change, water conservation, food security, and artificial intelligence. Ambassador O’Neill thanked the Chairman for his support and dedication to advancing educational and scientific cooperation between Pakistan and Ireland. Dr. Mukhtar Ahmed presented souvenirs to the visiting delegation.
