The Supreme Court has granted the Punjab government's request to reconsider its February 6th decision in the Mubarak Ahmad Sani case. The Court affirmed that the constitutional right to religious freedom is subject to law, morality, and public order. On Wednesday, a 27-page judgment was released addressing review petitions filed by the Punjab prosecutor general and other parties. These petitions challenged the original order, which had sparked controversy and a malicious campaign against Chief Justice of Pakistan Qazi Faez Isa. #Supremecourt #Pakistan

The Supreme Court is contemplating the appointment of retired judges to adjudicate over 54,000 unresolved cases. The Judicial Commission of Pakistan (JCP), responsible for appointing judges to the superior courts, is scheduled to convene on Friday to discuss the appointment of four retired judges as ad hoc members of the court. The JCP, led by Chief Justice of Pakistan Qazi Faez Isa, will deliberate on the nominations of retired Justices Mushir Alam, Maqbool Baqar, Mazhar Alam Miankhel, and Sardar Tariq Masood for these positions. #Supremecourt #Pakistan

Amnesty International’s Secretary General, Dr. Agnès Callamard, emphasized that international law, as outlined by the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, clearly prohibits civilians from being tried in military courts. She highlighted that despite this prohibition, such trials have regrettably occurred throughout Pakistan's political history and are not a new phenomenon. #militarytrial #amnestyinternational

It was a great pleasure to have this online talk organised by Dr Vijay Kishor Tiwari on Constitutionalism, Democracy and Governance in Islamic Law at Justice Radhabinod Pal Centre for Critical Legal Studies, The West Bengal National University of Juridical Sciences, India. We discussed the apparent complexities to capture the nuances of Islamic democracy in contemporary times. Whilst the issues of divergence and convergence of Islamic and Western constitutionalism persist, the debate on specificities of theoretical and functional mechanisms of statehood, democracy, and citizenship provide good potentials to understanding respective standpoints and explore synergies. At the same time, it is crucial to frame discussion as a constructive dialogue, and necessary to portray and view the contemporary Islamic democracy models as complementary to rather than rivals of Western liberal democracies. #islamiclaw #democracy #politicsandlaw #liberalism #islamism #islam
