#Teachers, Have you used #AI in unstructured ways to allow #students and #parents to explore a topic?

Today, I witnessed something extraordinary in my classroom that challenged everything we think we know about AI in education. Instead of handing students a rigid playbook of dos and don'ts with AI, I decided to flip the script entirely. Since summer, I've watched the endless parade of methodological frameworks and usage guidelines sweep through education. Each promising to be the "right way" to integrate AI into learning. But today, we tried something radically different. I simply asked my students to use AI to brainstorm their own learning objectives. No restrictions. No predetermined pathways. Just pure exploration. The results? Astonishing. Students began mapping out research directions I'd never considered. They created dialogue spaces with AI that looked more like intellectual partnerships than simple query-response patterns. Most importantly, they documented their journey, creating a meta-learning archive of their process. What struck me most was this: When we stopped fixating on the tangible "products" of AI interaction and instead centered on the mental maps being developed, something magical happened. Some might say this approach is too unstructured, too risky. But consider what we're gaining: 1. Metacognitive development: Students are thinking deeply about their own learning process 2. Agency and ownership: They're designing their own educational pathways 3. Critical navigation skills: Learning to chart courses through AI-enhanced knowledge spaces 4. Creative confidence: Freedom to experiment without fear of "wrong" approaches 5. Future-ready adaptability: Building skills to work with evolving AI systems We're not just teaching students to use AI – we're empowering them to design their own learning ecosystems. The focus isn't on what appears on the screen, but on the neural pathways being forged, the cognitive frameworks being built. Watching these students navigate this space, I'm reminded that the future of education isn't about controlling AI use – it's about nurturing the wisdom to use it well. We need to trust our students' capacity to be architects of their own learning journeys. The real breakthrough happens when we stop seeing AI as space to be contained and start seeing it as a landscape to be explored. Our role as educators isn't to build fences, but to help students develop their own compasses. #AIEducation #FutureOfLearning #EducationalInnovation #StudentAgency #EdTech #CognitiveDesign #GenerativeThinking Amanda Bickerstaff Stefan Bauschard Dr. Sabba Quidwai Mike Kentz David Gregg David H. In the hustle and ambition of building a career, it’s easy to overlook the foundation that got us here. For many of us, that foundation is rooted in the guidance, sacrifice, and unwavering support of good parents. I feel incredibly blessed to have had parents who taught me values, resilience, and the importance of kindness—things that have carried me through every high and low. Good parents don’t just shape our character; they’re the quiet force that often goes unnoticed, the ones who lift us up even when they’re carrying their own burdens. They provide us with lessons in humility, work ethic, and love, and they do it without expecting anything in return. If you’ve been lucky enough to have this kind of support, never take it for granted. Show gratitude not just in words, but in how you live, work, and give back. Cherish every lesson they’ve imparted and recognize the role they’ve played in making you who you are today. Take a moment today to reach out to your parents, mentors, or those who’ve stood in for that role, and let them know just how much they mean to you. It’s easy to get lost in the day-to-day grind, but it’s important to remember the true blessings in life. #Gratitude #Family #Parents #Foundation #EPM #EddyGPerezJr

Kids in Dubai 👨👧👦   I might get some heat for this post – but hey, no risk, no fun, right?   There are plenty of posts on LinkedIn and I shared one as well some time ago, about the challenges of having children in the UAE and making sure they will not lose touch with reality.   Over time, and especially yesterday I came to realize that some parents apparently have lost touch with reality.   It was Halloween and kids obviously love to go for “trick or treat”. Quickly we became a group of 20+ people, with me being the only parent. All of the others were sent out with their nannies.   You can witness this in other situations as well… on a Sunday at the mall where the parents walk up front, and the nanny follows with the kids on their arms or pushing the stroller. At the waterpark where the parents relax, and the nannies play with the kids in the water.   A couple of weeks ago there was a celebration at my kids´ school. There were just as many nannies as there were parents.   Why in the world do you have children if you do not take care of them and do not spend time with them?   I know it is required to work hard and long in Dubai, and it is a luxury to have a nanny at home who takes care of the children when you are not around and at work. But it is not their job to raise your children!   Spend time with your kids, because they grow up so fast and the time will come soon, when they will not need you anymore. Then you will look back to all the missed opportunities and feel sorry.

Preparing Your Child for the Real World: A Reality Check This summer marked a milestone as my students graduated, and it got me thinking: Are we, as parents and educators, truly preparing them for the realities of living independently? As parents, we naturally want to protect our children from hardships. But sometimes, this protectiveness can prevent them from developing the independence and resilience they need. Recently, some proud mothers shared that their children are applying for master’s programs abroad. Hearing this made me reflect. Many students take this step, only to struggle with challenges they weren’t prepared for. It’s essential to equip them with the skills to thrive on their own. One effective approach is to give them a taste of independent living within their home country. Encourage participation in an exchange program, internship, or job in another city for a few months. Let them manage finances, secure accommodation, and navigate everyday life without constant support. This builds confidence and problem-solving skills needed when living abroad. With the added complexities of adapting to a new culture and language overseas, simulating these challenges in a familiar environment helps prepare them to overcome obstacles and adjust to new situations. We must remember, as parents, our role is to guide and support—not make decisions for them. Fostering independence empowers children to make their own choices, learn from mistakes, and grow into confident, self-sufficient individuals. Quoting Max de Pree: “We need to give each other the space to grow… so that we may both give and receive such beautiful things as ideas, openness, dignity, joy, healing, and inclusion.”

As AI tutors like Khanmigo are set to expand to reach 1M+ students in the next year, new research from Stanford and OpenAI shows disturbing patterns in how AI responds to and depicts diverse students. The magnitude of bias is shocking - for example, one AI model portrayed Latine male students as over 1,300 times more likely to be shown as "struggling" than as "star" students. We saw this bias play out last Friday in our first set of workshops in Mexico City. When we asked ChatGPT to create images of a typical Mexican classroom and staff room, the images were so stereotypical that they bordered on being offensive. In the Stanford study, GenAI models were asked to create stories about learners, they found that the models consistently: ERASED multiple groups: - Indigenous/Native American, Native Hawaiian/Pacific Islander students are rarely depicted - Non-binary and queer students were severely underrepresented - When minority groups are shown they are often done so in limited stereotypical ways REINFORCED harmful stereotypes • Asian students were portrayed as "model minority" STEM experts, erasing individual differences • "White savior" narratives were common where minority students lack agency • Latina students (e.g. "Maria") were almost never shown excelling in STEM These AI biases can deeply impact students': • Sense of belonging • Academic confidence • Identity development • Educational outcomes With AI tools rapidly entering classrooms and increasingly being used by young people in and out of school, we need: • Culturally responsive AI development that takes into account diverse teacher and student perspectives • Additional research and analysis of these impacts • Protection for vulnerable students built into student facing GenAI tools • Critical examination of AI tools before and after deployment You can check out the links to the studies and interview with some of the authors in the links. It seems that this misses the managed risk in schools via trips, sports, outward bound etc. I can't recall a day in schools where I have not seen someone in some kind of cast/strapping!

“When is the last time you saw a kid with a cast on?” Before the 90s, kids experienced more risk, more thrills, more physical injuries, and fewer psychological injuries than they do today. Kids had more freedom to make mistakes and learn from them. Comedy bit by Andrew Sleighter about #freeplay. We have forgotten that kids are #antifragile. That means they improve with wear and tear — as does muscle fiber, the immune system, and a tree's roots in adverse conditions. We overprotect kids in the real world and underprotect them online, where the real dangers are. Kids need a lot more unsupervised free play. In #TheAnxiousGeneration I have 3 chapters on #freeplay explaining how crucial it is for proper development. For ways to add play and independence, check out Let Grow’s Let Grow Experience. It's designed for families and schools, and it's free. Kids immediately start feeling empowered. Google "Let Grow Experience," it comes right up. #play #freeplay #childhood #90schildhood
