This paper explores improving regional monitoring of forest disturbances and damages, emphasizing the distinction between the two terms and their management implications. It discusses the role of human expectations in data collection, the complexity of ecological processes, and challenges in consistent reporting across countries. Maria Brockhaus, Vilis Brukas, Ayonghe Nebasifu and Niina Pietarinen, Forests Monitor is pleased to announce a forthcoming Special Issue (SI) dedicated to advancing the frontiers of forest policy science. uthors are invited to submit original research articles, reviews, and case studies that align with the themes outlined below. Submissions should adhere to the Journal's guidelines and will undergo a rigorous double-blind peer-review process. The deadline for manuscript submissions is MARCH 15, 2025. The primary goal of this SI is to deepen the understanding of the multifaceted nature of political forests, and political forestry, examining different issues of forest governance, and generating insights on the future of forests in Europe. This SI originates from the International Forest Policy Meeting (IFPM), a biennial event addressing forest and forest-related issues from a social science perspective and bringing together scholars from Europe and beyond. New #researcharticle: "Do exporters of Canadian forest products price to market?" by Kurt Niquidet, Kyle Sia-Chan, Jonathan Kan, Lili Sun, and Craig Johnston is now published in the latest issue of #JFBR. Forest products in Canada contribute significantly to the Canadian trade balance. Canadian producers depend heavily on export markets raising the question: how do exchange rate fluctuations impact Canada’s competitiveness in foreign markets? The paper applies a fixed-effects model with individual slopes to investigate this question. Twenty years of monthly data are employed to study the pricing-to-market (PTM) behaviour of Canadian softwood log, lumber and pulp exports as the exchange rate changes. The authors find a great degree of incomplete exchange rate pass-through, with PTM being apparent for Canadian exporters, particularly in major markets. The export price adjustment tends to mitigate the effect of exchange rate fluctuations on foreign currency prices of Canadian products in most cases. This pricing behaviour reflects exporters’ desire to stabilize their share of the destination market. 👉Read the whole paper here: https://lnkd.in/d_WxH6v6

Investments in forest plantations are important for economic, environmental and social reasons. Latin America has a large area of forests with a wide range of development. Today, we published an #editorial by Virginia Morales and Vitor Afonso Hoeflich on "Trends of forest investments in selected countries of Latin America." In this paper, the authors review the status of investments in commercial forest plantations in Latin America, with a focus on Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Paraguay and Uruguay. The paper also includes a short review of five papers published in the Journal of Forest Business research on forest investments in Latin America. In this editorial, you can read that Brazil and Uruguay are advancing their forest sectors. Chile's forest sector is stable but facing internal issues, while Colombia has yet to develop a commercial forest sector despite its potential. Paraguay shows promise with a new pulp mill investment. New #forestbusinessnote: "Current expansions in the Brazilian timber market" by Bruno Kanieski da Silva, Roberto Kimura, Fred Cubbage and robert davis. The attractive financial returns from timberland investments in Brazil, particularly fast-growth tree plantations like pine and eucalyptus, have attracted multiple investors over the last decade. Among the countries with a competitive Pulp and Paper Industry (PPI), pulp and paper investors have expanded substantially in Brazil with new mills and planted areas. In this Forest Business Note, the authors present a comprehensive investigation of the dynamics of the Brazilian pulp and paper industry forest sector in the past decade. They described the current macroeconomic and political environment in Brazil and the expansion of mills and timberland in Brazil. We recently participated in the International Forest Business Conference (IFBC) in Sopot, Poland, where we had great dialogues with leaders across forest management from around the world! Our Partner Manager, Mariana Stang, delivered a talk on the future technologies within forestry, spotlighting OroraTech's innovative features like our Fire Spread simulation, Fire Risk index, and Burn Scar analytics. We also highlighted how our early wildfire detection capabilities can empower sustainable forestry to protect their lands against fire, and thereby combat climate change.
