Congress Demands Changes From Secret Service

Questions continue to mount around the Secret Service two days after a second assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump. On Monday, the interim director of the service admitted that agents did not search the perimeter of Trump’s West Palm Beach golf course, where the alleged gunman waited for 12 hours before he was spotted. Former Secret Service agent Michael Matranga talks about the work the agency does to protect people like Trump. Later in the show, Florida Democratic Rep. Jared Moskowitz, who sits on the bipartisan panel investigating the first assassination attempt against Trump, talks about Congress’ plans to investigate the latest incident. And in headlines: Israel declined to comment on what appeared to be a coordinated explosion of pagers used by members of Hezbollah that killed nine and injured thousands, Senate Republicans blocked a bill that would guarantee national access to IVF, and Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs faces federal charges of racketeering conspiracy and sex trafficking.

Exploding Pagers in Lebanon, Raising Tensions between Hezbollah and Israel

Authorities in Lebanon are blaming Israel for an apparent attack in which pagers, used by Hezbollah in Lebanon, exploded simultaneously. At least nine people were killed, more than 2,700 were injured. Tensions between Israel and Hezbollah, the Lebanese paramilitary group backed by Iran, had already been high and there were fears their frequent attacks on each other could escalate into all-out war. We hear about what this all could mean from our correspondent in the region. Learn more about sponsor message choices: podcastchoices.com/adchoices NPR Privacy Policy

The Major Stakes Of State Supreme Court Races

Voters in more than 30 states will get to weigh in on elections for their state supreme courts this November, with 82 seats up for grabs. While state judicial races often get overshadowed in a presidential election year, the outcomes of these races have massive consequences on people's lives. It's often state supreme courts that get the final say on local abortion restrictions, redistricting and gerrymandering cases, laws that target the LGBTQ community, and tons of other important issues. Daniel Nichanian, founder and editor of Bolts magazine, breaks down which states have big Supreme Court elections coming up and where the stakes are highest. And in headlines: The interim head of the Secret Service said the man suspected of planning a second assassination attempt against former President Donald Trump did not fire his rifle or have a sightline on Trump, Vice President Kamala Harris met with leaders from the Teamsters in an attempt to win their endorsement, and Boar's Head is shutting down the Virginia meat production facility at the center of a listeria outbreak.

    Ireland’s growing far right

Violent unrest is forcing Ireland to reckon with increasing hostility to high levels of immigration, which has not traditionally been a major point of political debate. That is changing, however, with roughly one in five Irish residents today born overseas. The country is grappling with a burgeoning far right movement, with much of the conversation happening on social media. In recent years, hostility towards foreigners which has been nurtured online has spilled over into the real world, the most stark example being a widely-covered riot in Dublin in November 2023. So how is a country which has historically been shaped by the emigration of its own people dealing with the issue of immigration in the 21st century, and is Ireland’s political establishment ready to meet the challenge? On this episode of The Global Story, Washington DC-based host Caitríona Perry is joined by the BBC’s Dublin reporter Aoife Moore, and by Shane Harrison, who worked as the BBC’s Ireland correspondent for three decades. The Story Behind ‘They’re Eating the Pets’

At this week’s presidential debate, Donald J. Trump went into an unprompted digression about immigrants eating people’s pets. While the claims were debunked, the topic was left unexplained. Miriam Jordan, who covers the impact of immigration policies for The Times, explains the story behind the shocking claims and the tragedy that gave rise to them. Guest: Miriam Jordan, a national immigration correspondent for The New York Times.

Putin escalates row over Ukraine weapons

Vladimir Putin has issued a warning against the UK and US lifting their restrictions on Ukraine using long-range missiles against targets inside Russia. Britain and France have already sent Storm Shadow missiles to Ukraine, but with the caveat that Kyiv can only fire them at targets inside its own borders. From the tone of President Putin’s latest remarks, it’s clear he considers that the targeting of internationally recognised Russian territory with Western missile systems would take the conflict to a new level. What he didn’t make clear is how Moscow would respond. Also in the programme, authorities in Nigeria Borno State say up to two million people affected by floods after the collapse of a dam earlier this week during heavy rainfall; and it's time for the tongue in cheek Ig Nobel awards - amusing studies with serious implications. • Poseidon is the god of the sea, Dionysus of wine and merrymaking, and Emily Oster? She’s the god of parenting.  An economics professor at Brown University, Oster has built a massive and loyal audience by providing overwhelmed parents with the information and data they need to make solid and sound parenting decisions in a very confusing world. Her first book, Expecting Better: Why the Conventional Pregnancy Wisdom Is Wrong—and What You Really Need to Know, sold over a million copies and was translated into 19 languages, unseating the classic What to Expect When You’re Expecting as a fixture on many pregnant mothers’ bedtime tables.  In this new series with The Free Press, Oster tackles the deep, difficult, existential, and often controversial questions facing parents today: Are we too soft on kids these days? How do I raise an independent child in an era of overprotection and helicopter parenting? Why are so many teen girls unhappy and anxious, and how can we make them happy again? Why are boys being left behind? Are kids overdiagnosed? What to do about the phones!? Is marriage important for raising kids? Should you even have kids at all?  These questions are more urgent than ever. That’s because, by many measures, kids are worse off today than 30 years ago. They are more anxious than ever. They’re more depressed. They have more diagnoses than ever before. They’re more medicated. More kids are being raised without two parents in the home today. Kids’ reading and math scores haven’t recovered since their decline during the Covid pandemic. Childhood obesity has risen to 19.7 percent. Kids spend on average 7.5 hours in front of a screen for entertainment each day, and the average teen spends around 9 hours a day on their phone. What’s going on with kids today? How worried should we be about our kids? And what should we be doing, as parents, to change course, before it’s too late? How do we raise good people—which starts with raising good, informed parents—in this strange, new world?  Over eight episodes, Oster speaks with over 50 of the world’s best parenting experts, journalists, doctors, psychologists, researchers, and more including: Dr. Becky, Jonathan Haidt, Pamela Druckerman, Richard Reeves, Hanna Rosin, Abigail Shrier, Bryan Caplan, Christine Emba, Johann Hari, Sami Timimi, Melissa Kearney, Ross Douthat, and many, many more. Oster brings her trusted voice—with its sobriety, wisdom, and humor—to the most challenging parenting questions of the day.  The best way to support this podcast is to become a Free Press subscriber today at TheFP.com/subscribe

What followed was one of the biggest and most expensive investigations in the history of the American South. To get to the bottom of this forgotten case, journalist Shaun Raviv visits a rural community with plenty of secrets. He discovers the epic history of the well-respected family who owned the property, uncovers the fates of the bodies sent to a crematory called Tri-State, and searches for the mysterious man at the center of it all. And in the process, Shaun explores one of the most primal and vexing questions we face as human beings: What do the living owe the dead? Noble is an 8-episode series with new episodes publishing Wednesday mornings.

  • Lost Patients takes you into new spaces most people have likely never experienced before — the inside of someone's psychosis, mental health court rooms, and the past and present streets of Seattle, says Esmy.Jimenez, collaborating journalist of Lost Patients, Apple Podcasts' Spotlight show for August 2024. Jimenez, joined by Will James and Sydney Brownstone, have created a deeply immersive six-part docuseries that explores the challenges of treating severe mental illness through the lens of one city's past, present, and future. Together, they have crafted a listening experience that mirrors the labyrinthine journey of individuals and families grappling with this crisis."Lost Patients put us in contact with some of the most profound people we've ever met: people who have experienced psychosis," says James. "They have been to some of the farthest reaches of human experience, often with terrifying or devastating results, and nonetheless wanted to share what it was like with others to help them understand. These conversations have changed my perspective on mental illness — and, in some ways, on being alive."Brownstone agrees, "I hope considering someone in psychosis as being stuck in a dream — rather than simply unpredictable and volatile for no reason — opens up a new pathway to empathy for listeners.""Our goal was to help listeners see all the various shades of gray in these big national conversations about homelessness, addiction, and mental health," Jimenez explains. For James, "This podcast is for the countless people who witness people in mental health crisis — either on the sidewalks, busses, and subways of U.S. cities or in sensational TV coverage — and are working through their own feelings of confusion, fear, anger, and hopelessness."
