Communication is also about giving and receiving feedback, brainstorming ideas, and listening to one another. You should also mentally check in with yourself every now and then. Trying to tune in to your feelings can make it easier to express your needs and your ideas when the time comes. Practices like mindfulness can be particularly helpful in identifying and assessing your inner feelings and experiences. Everyone should have the confidence to be heard, and everyone can make an effort to be inclusive. Empowering those around you is a highly efficient way of offering support to your team.

Everything starts with clear communication, but is further supported by transparency. Whenever a new change is needed - especially one that upends long-used protocols, my first and most important goal is to clearly explain the new structure and the rationale for its existence. I explain why we need to pivot, how this is going to help us, and the long-term benefits of said transition. I provide ample opportunity for questions and feedback, and most importantly I provide both an SOP on the new guidelines after training AND make myself available for support during the transition. In the backend, I monitor KPIs and metrics to know if the changes are being easily adapted or not, which is crucial in providing urgent assistance in the moment.
