✨ Today, we had the pleasure of hosting four curious and engaged students from Externato Cooperativo da Benedita! 🌱 They were eager to learn about the foods of the future, and we explored a lot of exciting topics together. From the sustainability of microalgae to their exceptional nutritional properties, these students raised some insightful questions—particularly about how microalgae compare to other so-called "superfoods." Here are a few highlights: 💡 Sustainability: Microalgae production requires fewer resources (water, land) than traditional agriculture, making it a more sustainable food source. 💪 Nutritional Powerhouse: Microalgae, like Chlorella and Spirulina, are packed with protein, essential vitamins, and minerals. Compared to other superfoods, microalgae are incredibly efficient in nutrient density per gram! 🌍 Future of Food: As we look towards addressing global food security, microalgae offer a solution that’s eco-friendly and rich in health benefits. Last week, I had the incredible opportunity to visit several key microalgae research and industry sites in Portugal. My journey started with a visit to PhytoBloom - Microalgae by Necton followed by an insightful tour of GreenCoLab in Faro, where I learned about the exciting algal research they are conducting in collaboration with various industrial partners. A special thanks to Monya Costa for hosting me. I then traveled to Allmicroalgae in Pataias, where Mª Helena Cardoso and Nádia Correia guided me through the entire microalgae production process—from the master cell bank and industrial reactors to packaging and storage. I’m grateful for the warm hospitality and the chance to engage with such innovative work. Looking forward to future collaborations in this exciting field!
