NEW PAPER: For the first time, scientists have quantified what is safe for the planet and just for humans. The new paper builds on almost two decades of planetary boundary research, combined with metrics for just access to resources. This new article by the Earth Commission acts as a science-based guide for all actors - especially businesses and cities - to take urgent, transformative action to reach the ‘Safe and Just space’, where all people can escape poverty and be safe from harm caused by Earth system change. The Mission’s new approach will address the ocean and waters as one and play a key role in achieving climate neutrality and restoring nature.” The Mission supports regional engagement and cooperation through “lighthouses,” with the Atlantic-Arctic basin selected as one of the regions to pilot, demonstrate, and implement Mission activities across EU seas and river basins. In this context, three projects are highlighted: 1. BlueMissionAA: An EU Mission Implementation Coordination and Support Action, establishing a hub to support Mission activities in the Atlantic and Arctic Basin, focused on restoring ocean and water health in these regions. 2. CLIMAREST: An innovation action contributing to the development of resilient ecosystems, essential for creating resilient communities. 3. A-AAGORA: An innovation action aimed at coastal restoration, emphasizing the integration of nature and people in the restoration process. CLIMAREST: PROJETO INTERNACIONAL QUE PRETENDE REPOR ALGAS E RESTAURAR HABITATS COSTEIROS DA MADEIRA (João Monteiro, Coordenador das atividades do projeto Climarest na Madeira) O Climarest é um projeto internacional, financiado pelo programa Horizon Europe, que faz parte da Mission Oceans da EU. O grande objetivo da missão é garantir e apoiar a proteção e conservação dos nossos oceanos, e está alinhada com a Década dos Oceanos das Nações Unidas. Enquadrado no programa de financiamento Atlantic-Artic basins lighthouse, o Climarest, em conjunto com outros projetos, tem como missão promover a restauração de diversos tipos habitats marinhos através de avanços científicos, tecnológicos e metodológicos envolvendo diversos stakeholders. Para além dos parceiros do consórcio, o projeto inclui ainda entidades de outros cinco países onde se estabelecem locais de replicação – um para cada local de demonstração, onde se pretende avaliar se as estratégias desenvolvidas para cada um dos cinco habitats se aplicam em locais com habitas e condições semelhantes. Estamos a trabalhar na restauração de habitat rochoso que deixaram de ter algas. Por outro lado, o crescimento das populações de ouriços em particular do ouriço de espinhos compridos – Diadema africanum, que se alimentam de algas, impediu o estabelecimento e crescimento de novas algas. Desenvolvemos uma aplicação móvel, que se chama Dive Reporter, em que cada centro de mergulho participante pode reportar avistamentos de 24 espécies que servem com indicadores, uma lista compilada por biólogos inclui espécies protegidas, espécies não nativas, espécies comerciais e espécies que formam habitat.
