Energy demand for Lisbon’s office buildings is increasing dramatically. For fully glazed buildings, like the case study below, this trend is especially challenging. Cooling demand is expected to increase by 31.6%, while heating needs will decrease by 31.5% according to future climate models (RCP 4.5 scenario for 2050). To design buildings that are ready for future, here are the key considerations: 🔹 Reducing Window-to-Wall Ratio: keeping it below 60%. 🔹 Advanced Glazing Solutions: heat gain coefficient below 0.25 and double-glazed windows. 🔹 Passive Cooling Strategies: incorporating mixed or natural ventilation, and operable exterior shading. As we design for the future, balancing aesthetics with energy efficiency will be essential in adapting buildings to Lisbon’s evolving climate. #ClimateAdaptation #SustainableDesign #FullyGlazedBuildings #CoolingDemand #FutureBuilding #EnergyEfficiency Source: Dosta Tec internal project
Sobre nós
Future climate scenarios show an imperative need for building stock transformation. Our mission is to drive the necessary action to renovate and boost energy efficiency in the sector. We are looking for a positive impact of the built environment on nature, human health and well-being. Sustainability is not enough, which is why we advocate for a regenerative approach to design and construct buildings for the future generation. We provide design, energy modelling, and simulation services to our clients, framing our recommendations within existing legislation and future climate data. Nearly Zero-Energy Buildings (nZEB) and Energy-Positive are at the core of our services. Our holistic approach is based on Life Cycle Assessment, balancing passive and active solutions, building performance, and environmental impact of materials. Human comfort (thermal and visual) guide our energy-efficient recommendations. The Portuguese building stock is a priority for the European Commission within the Renovation Wave initiative. Based in Porto, Portugal, at Boavista Engineering we create solutions at the forefront of the transformation.

🌍 Invisible Heroes of Sustainable Construction 🌍 In #sustainable construction, some of the most impactful choices remain "invisible" yet powerful. Roman Mars has been talking about 99% invisible for years actually. Especially today, when we are talking about #renovation and materials plays crucial role in #decarbonisation. For instance, insulation made from cellulose or other #biobased materials may never be seen but reduces a building’s #carbonfootprint significantly. Similarly, windows made from #recycled glass look identical to conventional ones yet play a vital role in reducing sand mining and #constructionwaste. These materials might not add to the visual appeal, but their contribution to lowering emissions, minimizing resource extraction, and cutting waste is immense. As we advance in sustainable design, it's crucial to recognize and promote the silent champions making a difference from the inside out. #SustainableConstruction #InvisibleImpact #GreenBuilding #CircularEconomy

The charts below show the embodied carbon of three new buildings in Porto and Lisbon, Portugal, for which we conducted a #LifeCycleAssessment. The highest impact of #embodiedcarbon (Shell and Core) comes from upper floors (slabs) and structural elements. Designing #concrete buildings for #duration and #flexibility is key, as concrete, unlike many other materials, cannot be easily recycled. By making structures adaptable, we extend their lifespan, #reduce waste and lower the environmental impact of producing new concrete, which is carbon-intensive. At Dosta Tec, we aim to work with the industry to reduce embodied carbon through material selection and looking for the best structural strategy, such as #modular design or #designfordisassembly.

We are at the #CChangeSummit organized by @urbanlandinstitute in Barcelona. The main question is: How to accelerate #decarbonisation of the real estate sector. #climateemergency is present from the first slide. Rebalance Earth is suggesting #NatureBasedSolutions as one of the primary solutions. Robert Gardner is making #nbs as a business case 💡 >>> 10 min of a flood costs Heathrow Airport 100K£.

Exciting news! One of our very first projects is now under construction 🎉 The #renovation of a townhouse in downtown Porto presented quite the challenge for the design team. We worked mostly on #upfrontcarbon optimization. We're grateful to our client for trusting in our vision when we were still an emerging company. A great example of #decarbonization on a small, urban scale. Looking forward to seeing it come to life!

We will be participating in the PLGBC Polish Green Building Council 2024 in Warsaw. Our presence in the Polish construction market has been growing ever since we first started work there in 2022. Compared to Portugal, there are important differences: Poland is mainly new construction, whereas in Portugal refurbishment is more common.
