EDP is breaking new ground in renewable energy with automation technology, with the testing of Hyperflex, an innovative automation solution from Comau, in the construction of a solar park in Peñaflor, Spain. This pilot, part of the AutoPV project, will automate 3MW of the 122MW solar park, reducing solar panel assembly time by up to 50%. It also includes a mobile factory with an automatic assembly station where the photovoltaic structure is pre-assembled and a rover that transports and positions this structure at the final location on the ground. This entire system is transported by trucks and assembled directly at the solar park. By leveraging robotics and advanced technology, EDP is aiming for faster, safer, and more sustainable solar park construction, allowing the workforce to focus on specialized tasks. “We believe that technology and innovation are a decisive ally in accelerating the energy transition, that's why this is a strategic axis of investment and growth for EDP on a global scale", says António Coutinho, CEO of EDP Innovation. Although producing energy through photovoltaic panels is more sustainable, the truth is that sometimes there’s just not enough space to install it and there are areas where it isn’t even possible - like historically protected city centers. Building-integrated photovoltaics are a crucial technology to help decarbonize urban areas, since you can use the power of photovoltaics without compromising a building’s design, while making better use of available surfaces. The components therefore have a dual use, as they also continue to serve their original purpose within the construction.
