🚀 𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐝𝐨 𝐩𝐚𝐩𝐞𝐫 𝐩𝐥𝐚𝐧𝐞𝐬, 𝐒𝐮𝐝𝐨𝐤𝐮, 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐛𝐨𝐨𝐤 𝐎𝐬 𝐌𝐚𝐢𝐚𝐬 𝐡𝐚𝐯𝐞 𝐭𝐨 𝐝𝐨 𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐡 𝐛𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐤𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐚 𝐆𝐮𝐢𝐧𝐧𝐞𝐬𝐬 𝗪𝐨𝐫𝐥𝐝 𝐑𝐞𝐜𝐨𝐫𝐝? 𝐄𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐲𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐠!🎉 On an otherwise lazy Saturday morning, a line spiralling around the 𝐓𝐞́𝐜𝐧𝐢𝐜𝐨 𝐈𝐧𝐧𝐨𝐯𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐂𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐫 (𝐓𝐈𝐂) hinted that something extraordinary was about to happen – something worthy of the 𝐆𝐮𝐢𝐧𝐧𝐞𝐬𝐬 𝐖𝐨𝐫𝐥𝐝 𝐑𝐞𝐜𝐨𝐫𝐝𝐬. The mission? To set the record for the 𝐥𝐚𝐫𝐠𝐞𝐬𝐭 𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐩𝐮𝐭𝐞𝐫 𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐠𝐫𝐚𝐦𝐦𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐥𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐨𝐧 in a single venue, a challenge that Instituto Superior Técnico and Magma Studio were determined to achieve. The 𝟗𝟎-𝐦𝐢𝐧𝐮𝐭𝐞 𝐥𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐨𝐧, held October 13, led by Inês Lynce (President of INESC-ID), Arlindo Oliveira (President of INESC), and Rodrigo Girão Serrão (an IST alum), featured creative ways to explain algorithms. From making paper planes ✈️ to solving Sudoku puzzles and asking a pretrained language model questions about the master peace of Portuguese literature, Os Maias. Though technical issues arose, by the end, the record was set, with 𝟏,𝟔𝟔𝟖 𝐚𝐭𝐭𝐞𝐧𝐝𝐞𝐞𝐬 – surpassing the previous mark of 𝟕𝟐𝟒 𝐩𝐚𝐫𝐭𝐢𝐜𝐢𝐩𝐚𝐧𝐭𝐬 set in Dallas, USA, in 2016. 🎉 For 𝐈𝐧𝐞̂𝐬 𝐋𝐲𝐧𝐜𝐞, the 𝐟𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐞 𝐚𝐭𝐦𝐨𝐬𝐩𝐡𝐞𝐫𝐞, the large number of 𝐠𝐢𝐫𝐥𝐬 𝐩𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐞𝐧𝐭, and the overall excitement for programming were worth the effort of preparing such an unusual lesson. In the words of Técnico President, Rogerio Colaco, it was a true “𝐜𝐞𝐥𝐞𝐛𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐨𝐟 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐧𝐠 𝐭𝐚𝐥𝐞𝐧𝐭.”🌟 🔗 To know more about the backstage of the event 👇 https://lnkd.in/dhni79Jd Images | © Instituto Superior Técnico and INESC-ID #Innovation #Programming #GuinnessWorldRecord #Técnico #INESCID #YoungTalent #STEM #TechEducation

🍎 𝗦𝗵𝗼𝘄𝗰𝗮𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗜𝗻𝗻𝗼𝘃𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗶𝗻 𝗔𝗴𝗿𝗶𝗰𝘂𝗹𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲: 𝗜𝗡𝗘𝗦𝗖-𝗜𝗗 𝗮𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗔𝗴𝗿𝗶𝗰𝘂𝗹𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗮𝗹 𝗜𝗻𝗻𝗼𝘃𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗙𝗮𝗶𝗿 𝗶𝗻 𝗙𝘂𝗻𝗱ã𝗼🌾 The world needs agriculture to become more efficient and sustainable. And technology can be the best partner to achieve this. From October 10 to 13, 2024, one of the INESC-ID teams from the PRR Blockchain PT project participated in the 3rd Edition of the Agricultural Innovation Fair in Fundão. During the event, a new version of the FoodSteps mobile application, which tracks fruit traceability from field to store, was presented. The highlight? A personalized customer interaction feature through an e-paper label and wireless communication via Bluetooth. 📱📊🍇 The fair, which attracted a great audience and media attention, provided an excellent platform to engage with the public and industry leaders, boosting the impact of our ongoing research in adding value to Portuguese agricultural products. 🌿 Held at Praça Amália Rodrigues, next to the Fundão Business and Services Center, the event also showcased the latest agricultural technology and solutions in real-world conditions across approximately 40 hectares of experimental farms. 🌾🌍 Attendees had the chance to experience cutting-edge innovations first-hand, with a focus on making agriculture more efficient and sustainable. 💡🔧 The fair also featured conferences, roundtables, and debates about the role of agriculture in the Portuguese economy, contributing to the dissemination of knowledge, preservation of cultural practices, and promotion of regional products. 📢💬🌱 🔗 To know more about the Blockchain PT project 👇 https://lnkd.in/dhQu5-pu Images | © 2024 INESC-ID #Innovation #Agriculture #Blockchain #INESCID #Technology #Sustainability #FoodTraceability #PRR

Tens of thousands of data centres spread across the globe are at the heart of this highly complex flow of information. However, as the number of data centres increases, so does their consumption of natural resources and energy, leading to a larger carbon footprint and significant environmental impacts. 🌐⚡ 🌱 This was the focus of a recently aired episode titled “Data Centres: what’s the path to sustainability?” on RTP’s TV programme “Biosfera,” where INESC-ID researcher Rodrigo Rodrigues explained why and how data centres are becoming major consumers of energy and natural resources worldwide. In the episode, Rodrigo also discussed innovative solutions being developed to minimise this impact, giving him “reasons to be optimistic and vigilant.” While "AI can revolutionise digital transition and the generation of knowledge for preserving our planet", it will "not be easy to track the environmental impacts associated with the manufacture and use of these data systems". 🖥️ 👉 Watch the full episode (in Portuguese): https://lnkd.in/dNABPfHf #Sustainability #DataCenters #AI #EnvironmentalImpact #GreenTech #Innovation #EnergyEfficiency #DigitalTransformation #INESCID

🩺 𝗜𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗱𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗺𝗲𝗱𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗳𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗮𝘁 𝗿𝗶𝘀𝗸? Featured in the cover theme of this October’s edition of National Geographic, Ana Teresa Freitas, INESC-ID researcher and coordinator of INESC-ID’s Health and Life Technology Thematic Line, shared valuable insights and predictions about the revolution of medicine currently underway. Unlike TV shows like House or Grey's Anatomy, where doctors are the sole protagonists, Ana Teresa, an international expert on AI applied to medical research, highlighted that the future of medicine and the profile of medical doctors will likely see significant changes: 🧬🦠💻 algorithms will play a larger role in triage and diagnosis, and hospitals will be transformed by technology. In the future, wearables will replace basic exams, providing continuous data to computing hubs; computing specialists, teleconsultations, and robotic arms in operating rooms will be the norm, and medicine will include a much broader range of skills beyond traditional expertise. 🤖🏥 Read the online editorial (in PT)  👉 https://lnkd.in/dck_C4-t (or the full article in the printed version). #MedicalRevolution #FutureOfMedicine #HealthTech #Digitalhealth #INESCID
