This past weekend, on October 25th and 26th, Nova SBE Health Economics & Management Knowledge Center’s Scientific Director, Professor Pedro Pita Barros, contributed to the Atlantic Health Wellness Summit (AHWS) in Porto, where health innovation and the future of wellbeing took center stage. Hosted at the historic Alfândega do Porto, AHWS convened visionary leaders and transformative thinkers to redefine healthcare and wellbeing in an era of longevity. Professor Pita Barros presented on the key macrotrends shaping health care over the next five years: 1. Workforce Shortages and Evolving Roles of Health Professionals The global shortage of health professionals demands swift adaptation. As healthcare providers compete for talent, reshaping roles and responsibilities within both public and private sectors will be crucial. 2. Value-Based Health Care and Process Transformation Moving towards value-based health care is no longer just a concept but a practical imperative. Yet, barriers like IT infrastructure and the culture of care delivery among health professionals are challenges we must address head-on. 3. Consolidation and Efficient Size of Health Care Providers Economies of scale are driving consolidation, but balanced networks that combine local proximity with larger, more digitally integrated providers are essential. AHWS provided a valuable platform for discussing these and other pressing issues facing the health sector and offered attendees the opportunity to exchange knowledge and approaches essential to improving the future of health and longevity. #NHEM #NovaSBE #AHWS2024 #HealthInnovation #ValueBasedCare #HealthcareTransformation 📸Photos by André Carvalho: https://lnkd.in/dZfTh2_h

The Ageing Report, drawn up by Pedro Pita Barros and Carolina Borges da Cunha Santos, highlights the impact of Portugal's ageing population on health spending and access to care for the elderly. In six main dimensions - from financial protection and active ageing to the impact of loneliness - the study underlines the importance of strengthening social responses to combat elderly poverty and promote active ageing. Joint action is key: to tackle these challenges, health and social protection systems, along with other sectors of society, must work together.
