Amazing achievement from our partners at GreenCoLab! 🍻

REALM algae project is going at full speed! During the past weeks, we performed pilot-scale cultivation and tested a biorefinery pipeline to be implemented in the project. We started with the cultivation of Chlorella sp. in 3-m3 of drain water provided by Grupo Hubel, for biomass production and removal of excess nutrients. Then, the produced biomass was harvested and concentrated using membrane filtration, which was then subjected to enzymatic hydrolysis. Finally, another membrane filtration was performed to separate the permeate from the retentate using 2 different membrane cut-offs. This process resulted in 4 different fractions, which were freeze-dried and provided to the partners for testing and product development.

🌱 Algarve’s first-ever Biotech Hackathon is here! 🌱 From October 18-20, the Biotech Hackathon Challenge, organized by Centre of Marine Sciences (CCMAR), will bring together innovators, scientists, and biotech enthusiasts to tackle exciting challenges in the field. We are thrilled to announce that Necton is a proud sponsor of this groundbreaking event, with a special focus on microalgae research. One of the challenges, designed by Prof. João Varela, centers on bioinformatics for genomic identification of microalgae contaminants—an exciting intersection of biotechnology and sustainability. 📣 Our new project, COSEC, has officially begun! The aim of this project is to develop a circular bioenergy system that recycles biogenic CO2 emissions to produce energy-rich algae biomass. This biomass will be converted into biogas and biocrude, which, enriched with renewable H2, can be reused for energy generation. The #COSEC kick-off meeting took place at Universidade do Algarve, joining all the project partners. During the morning, we had the project presentation, where we discussed the overview and planning of the project, and during the afternoon we continued with a breakout session, where the partners presented and discussed their work packages and respective timelines. We ended the day with an amazing dinner at Checkin Restaurant, by Chef Leonel Pereira. 

Last week, Patricia Diogo, our innovation manager, was thrilled to join S2GETHER+ in S2AquacoLAB with the presentation “O presente e futuro de desenvolvimento de novos produtos de microalgas na Necton”. In this event, Patricia showcased Necton´s strategic objectives and improvements towards new product development process and technical improvements of microalgae production and processing to reach high sustainability and high aquaculture product efficiency and innovation. It was great to celebrate the approvals of the new projects where we will work together such as INOVAQUA, Engenharia e Ambiente, Lda and AQUA4ALL, and to brainstorm new ways to boost the collaborations between Necton and S2AQUAcoLAB. We’re excited to share some highlights from our Innovation Coordinator, Alexandre Rodrigues' plenary presentation at the 19th GERLI Association International Lipidomics Meeting. Alexandre presented a very engaging talk titled "An Industry Perspective on Microalgae Lipids: Economics, Regulations, and Societal Impact." His insights inspired lively discussions about the future of microalgal lipids and their transformative potential across industries and society. Today we received the visit of Sara Hamzelou from CSIRO, Australia's national science agency. Sara has a PhD in Proteomics and is working in microalgae protein digestibility. Welcome to the team Bruno Várzea! Bruno is now a part of the innovation team at Necton, where he will support us as an innovation technician. With a master’s degree in Molecular and Microbial Biology from the Universidade do Algarve and previous experience in the overexpression and silencing of a specific gene and the impact of different diets on mice's gut microbiota, Bruno will bring new insights into our research.
