Symington Family Estates is a leading Port and Portuguese wine producer headquartered in Porto, Portugal. The majority of our vineyards are located in the Douro Valley, in the north of Portugal, consisting of 26 estates covering 2,462 hectares and 1,114 hectares of vineyard. We are an independent family business (the first Symington began working as a Port producer in Porto in 1882). Today, ten members of the 4th and 5th generation work across our four Port houses: Graham’s, Cockburn’s, Dow’s and Warre’s, and portfolio of Douro wine brands – Quinta do Vesuvio, Quinta do Ataíde, Altano and Prats & Symington (producers of Chryseia and Post Scriptum). In 2019 we launched our first wines from Quinta da Fonte Souto, a stunning estate in the Portalegre sub-region of the Alto Alentejo. All our vineyards are sustainably managed under a minimum intervention certification and 130 ha are organically farmed, the largest area of organic vineyard in northern Portugal. We have invested significantly in viticulture R&D to adapt to climate change and are working on an ambitious sustainability plan, with a series of goals under the banner of Mission 2025. In 2019 we became a certified B Corporation – the first wine company in Portugal to take this step – joining a global community of businesses audited for the highest standards of social and environmental responsibility, committed to using business as a force for good. We had the pleasure of bringing together many of our Matriarca wine club members from Portugal and the UK for the very first time last weekend. Hosted by brothers Harry and Rob Symington at the historic Factory House in downtown Porto, our members enjoyed a very special dinner which included magnums of Quinta do Vesúvio 2015 and the spectacular Dow’s 1966 Vintage Port. Our UK members were then treated to a visit of Graham's Quinta dos Malvedos, followed by a boat trip downriver to Dow's Quinta do Bomfim - with Charlotte joining brother Harry to host the group. They had a fantastic lunch at Bomfim 1896 with Pedro Lemos paired beautifully with our wines, including Ilustres Desconhecidos Gouveio and Graham’s 2003 Library Release Vintage Port. Time can do remarkable things in the right hands. Years can round corners, smooth and soften edges. Decades can transform – the slow reveal of something extraordinary. Few have the hands for this work. And this, too, takes time. Each master begins as an apprentice. These wines, entrusted to time, were crafted by the artisans of the past. ‘They’ll be ready one day.’ This is their legacy. The work of their hands, and those of generations since. Now it is their time. To tell the tales of the past. To reveal their memories. Regale their stories. Each cask is a symphony – each drop a note. What a privilege it is to taste the past. Last week, we joined the other members of The Travel Retail Fine Wine Alliance (TRFWA) in Cannes for our third annual drinks reception at La Mandala beach. Each of the member companies was tasked with choosing two wines to present, and we shared Graham’s 50 Year Old Tawny Port (4.5L) – recent recipient of 100 points from Richard Mayson – and Dow’s 2003 Vintage Port (3L). The Cask Curation Series pays homage to the noble art of cooperage and the unique character that casks can impart to The Dalmore’s outstanding whiskies.
