NVIDIA has quietly been building one of the most pivotal uses for radiance fields. Deployed as part of fVDB - a new deep-learning framework for generating AI-ready virtual representations of the real world. What does this mean? Large scale digital twins that will power the next generation of machine vision applications (self driving cars, drones, robots, even weather prediction models) This video is just showing you a taste of what is possible. fVDB will soon be available as NVIDIA NIM inference microservices, including: fVDB Mesh Generation NIM — Generates digital 3D environments of the real world fVDB NeRF-XL NIM — Generates large-scale NeRFs in OpenUSD using Omniverse Cloud APIs fVDB Physics Super-Res NIM — Performs super-resolution to generate an OpenUSD-based, high-resolution physics simulation Learn more at: https://lnkd.in/gNWCUEzX #3D #AI #Geospatial

Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil's southernmost state, recently faced catastrophic floods that left 80% of its municipalities underwater. A positive outcome of this tragedy was a significant increase in society's awareness regarding the potential of agroforestry systems not only for the production of healthy food but especially for environmental recovery and creating resilience to extreme climate events. It is encouraging to see that several new policies to support agroforestry practices are being developed, as shown in the news below. Fortunately, this is a movement that is gaining strength globally and we are pleased to think that Treescape will be a great help in expanding agroforestry systems. Note: the news is in Portuguese but it can be easily read in English with Google Translate. https://lnkd.in/d5ureehx #GZH #agroforestry #regeneration #climatecrisis #treescape

This is not what I expected reading the documentation of the CLAY Foundation's #ai model: to be painfully and urgently reminded of a tragedy I am all to familiar with: the devastating forest fire of Monchique. In 2018, we drove with a group of friends with whom we left a thriving permaculture farm as the result of festival, to organise a second festival. The day before we left, we heard that all of Monchique was laid into ashes. As we arrived, the soil was still warm to the touch. Ash as far as the eye could see. An absolute tragedy. We brought seeds from all over. Dug trenches (swales) to capture as much erosion as possible, reducing loss of minerals. Replaced the borehole pump and immediately started watering. The result; abundant regeneration in the following spring. Until the next fire. The fire cycle in the Southern Algarve seems to have gone down to some 15 years. Somehow, people are still planting pyrrophics (eucalyptus and pine), to make paper. For Europeans to rub their butts with and for 'eco' paper cups and bags. This has to change. Pinpointing tree crowns using #opensource #ai Inspired by promising talks about a potential collaboration with FarmTree B.V. we did a first experiment (with Ecoaldeia Silverto's forest) to make a tree inventory based on UAV/drone imagery (for larger trees, this also works on satellite). This is out of the box, very little tweaking. Imagine what a little fine tuning could do! Of course, it's all open source (in this case, based on the DeepForest library). What if, instead of producing food while creating tremendous environmental damage and extending social debt, we could do it by using nature-based technologies that regenerate ecosystem services creating value on multiple levels? That's why we are so excited about Treescape! Because it will give access to this marvelous technology through the power of AI empowering people all over the world to foster their agroforestry crops. It’s amazing how fast technological innovation in operational forestry is accelerating! Many of the grand challenges that always kept us several steps away from digital transformation to smart forestry or ‘Forestry 4.0’ are being solved by researchers and innovators around the world working toward common goals. Can we generate lidar-based single tree inventories for mixed-species forests over large landscapes? Yes. Can we use satellite internet to share data from equipment and sensors in areas where we’ve never been able to make phone calls in the past? Yes. Can we identify trees and logs from their bark in real-time from equipment using 3d sensors, AI and Deep Learning? Register for the 2024 Council on Forest Engineering (COFE) Annual Meeting in Moscow, Idaho May 21-24 to hear Dr. Philippe Giguère at Université Laval answer that one when he summarizes 6 years of research that moves us one step closer to making forestry equipment automation, robotics, and AI-informed decision-making for operators a reality. Thank you, Dr. Giguère for sharing this clip of your research! Register for COFE today before fees increase on May 4, 2024! https://lnkd.in/gS_x3jYw       University of Idaho

Scaling regenerative agriculture in Europe with Climate Farmers. Co-founder of Love Foundation, VCA NL & Hug Records. TED Countdown & BMW Responsible Leader. Studying regenerative culture & regenerative leadership.

Our current agricultural system is broken. The way how we farm is destroying and degrading the very basis of our entire food system, soil. Soil degradation is defined as a change in soil health status resulting in a diminished capacity of the ecosystem to provide goods and services for its beneficiaries (FAO, 2020). Globally we are estimating that around 33% of the world soil are degraded. In Europe we are over achievers and we managed to have 39% of our farmland in a degraded state with nutrient imbalances. In regards to measurable soil pollution via pesticides we even reached 48%, Netherlands, Spain and Portugal all being high performers here, as you can see in the picture below. One example of what this leads to, is the flooding damages that have become a regular occurrence in Europe. Our degraded soils are not able to take up water anymore when it rains, which leads to flooding damages as well as droughts. This then also leads to crop losses and ultimately effects our food security in Europe. For me the case is clear, we need to shift away from a destructive agriculture to one that builds soil health and we need to support farmers financially in making that shift. Yet the Dutch government is so far the only European government investing substantial money into this with their 129 million Re-Ge-NL Fund. A good step in the right direction, but a joke if I look at the 2 billion in damages that we had just for flooding damages in Southern Germany in the last 2 weeks! How no political party is making the scaling of regenerative agriculture at least a priority in their agenda is beyond me. If you know one that does, I would love to hear it, I could not find one. For more details on soil erosion, please read the article that I left in the comments, thanks to Michał Słota for showing it to me.
