O biogás e o biometano são gases renováveis e sua utilização é essencial se quisermos acelerar a redução das emissões de GEE em vários setores.
A implantação do biometano para substituir os combustíveis fósseis não requer o investimento de recursos adicionais para desenvolver novas infra-estruturas. A infraestrutura de gás existente está preparada para o biometano. Isto é fundamental para acelerar a descarbonização.
O biometano pode ser facilmente armazenado e produzido a um ritmo constante, ajudando a equilibrar o fornecimento de energia a partir de fontes de energia intermitentes de origem renovável, como a solar ou a eólica. Em termos geopolíticos, ele traz segurança energética, pois pode ser comercializado e produzido onde há geração de resíduos (em toda parte), garantindo a segurança do abastecimento e evitando a dependência de fornecedores externos.
O biogás e o biometano já estão disponíveis e também são competitivos em termos de custos, ainda mais se forem consideradas todas as externalidades positivas geradas pela sua produção.
O biogás e o biometano evitam emissões em toda a cadeia de valor, com um efeito triplo de mitigação de emissões. Em primeiro lugar, evitam emissões que de outra forma ocorreriam naturalmente: os resíduos orgânicos são levados para o ambiente controlado das usinas de biogás, evitando que as emissões produzidas pela decomposição da matéria orgânica sejam lançadas na atmosfera. Em segundo lugar, o biogás e o biometano produzidos substituem os combustíveis fósseis como fontes de energia. Em terceiro lugar, a utilização do digestato obtido no processo de produção de biogás como biofertilizante ajuda a devolver o carbono orgânico ao solo e reduz a procura por fertilizantes fósseis.
Estudos mais recentes também mostram que o biometano é uma forma eficaz de reduzir as emissões de GEE provenientes dos transportes se considerarmos a pegada de carbono total dos veículos (Well-to-Wheel). Dependendo da matéria-prima utilizada, o biometano pode ter emissões até negativas, o que significa que o CO2 é realmente removido da atmosfera. O biometano liquefeito pode ser utilizado, por exemplo, no transporte rodoviário pesado e no setor marítimo, ambos difíceis de eletrificar.
O biogás e o biometano são gerados a partir de diferentes tipos de resíduos orgânicos, transformando os resíduos num recurso valioso, que é o princípio fundamental de uma economia circular eficiente. Os resíduos alimentares ou as águas residuais podem ser recuperados nas nossas cidades e utilizados para produzir energia renovável, o que ajuda a desenvolver uma bioeconomia local. No campo, os resíduos da pecuária ou a biomassa da agricultura podem ser otimizados e convertidos em energia, enquanto o digestato pode ser utilizado como fertilizante orgânico. Isto cria modelos de negócios adicionais no setor agrícola, tornando-o mais competitivo em termos de custos, e promove a agricultura sustentável.
