A new study out of Annals of Internal Medicine provides an update on the cost of cancer screening in the U.S. It flags colonoscopy as having an outsized cost – approximately 55% of the $43.2 billion spent on cancer screening in the U.S. in 2021. Three key points to keep in mind when reading the study (more details on our website: https://ow.ly/6Pbs50SScWX): 1. We are very good at screening for colorectal cancer. CRC is the only cancer for which the U.S. Preventive Services Taskforce has a Grade A recommendation for all people of a certain age. This is a research-based recommendation of the clinically meaningful benefits of screening. Screening prevents colorectal cancer and saves lives – we celebrate that. 2. While colonoscopy does have high costs at the time of screening, it can result in significant cost-saving downstream since colorectal cancer has the second-highest treatment cost of any cancer. 3. It is inappropriate to lump colonoscopy with other cancer screening tests without considering the total costs of screening, which includes the follow-up of abnormal mammograms, cervical cancer tests, PSA, lung CT scans and FIT.

Breaking Immunosuppression: Beyond attacking cancer cells, MC9999 also targets immunosuppressive cells within the tumor environment, such as TAMs and microglia, potentially turning the tide against immune evasion. 🤼♂️ T Cell Vs Cancer Cell 🤼♂️ CAR T-cell therapy makes T cells focus their attention toward a substance the body thinks is harmful called an antigen, which is found on the surface of specific cancer cells. In the manufacturing of CAR T cells, a protein is added to the T cell’s surface to help them achieve this focus. This protein is called a chimeric antigen receptor, or CAR. This CAR protein is actually made up of 3 other proteins: 1 protein that recognizes antigens on the cancer cell and 2 proteins that signal the T cell to activate when that first protein attaches to an antigen on the cancer cell. When a T cell has a CAR added to it, it is called a “CAR T cell.” CAR T cells work by floating around the body and looking for cells that carry the antigen programmed into the CAR protein, like certain cancer cells. When a CAR T cell comes in contact with an antigen on a cancer cell, it activates. Activated CAR T cells multiply and signal to other parts of the immune system to come to the site of the cancer cell. These signaling proteins are called cytokines. All of these cytokines and activated T cells then cause significant inflammation focused at the cancer cell, which causes the cancer cell to die. If all of the cancer cells die, the cancer can become in remission, which means the cancer has disappeared either temporarily or permanently. The bioactive compounds in caterpillar fungus, including cordycepin (a nucleoside analog), have demonstrated anti-cancer properties in preliminary studies. Cordycepin has shown promise in inhibiting cancer cell proliferation and inducing apoptosis (programmed cell death) in various cancer types. These compounds are believed to target critical signaling pathways involved in tumor growth, metastasis, and resistance to chemotherapy. In the realm of non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC), which accounts for approximately 85% of all lung cancer cases, the market for treatment options is rapidly expanding. NSCLC is notoriously challenging to treat, especially in its advanced stages, with resistance to conventional therapies being a major hurdle. However, recent advancements in targeted therapies and immunotherapies have improved patient outcomes. This study investigates the prevalence of pathogenic or likely #pathogenicgermlinevariants (PGVs) in individuals with #lung adenocarcinoma who meet specific criteria such as a #familyhistory of lung cancer, early-onset, minimal #smokinghistory, or #actionablegenomicalterations. it was found that 21.4% of the 201 patients had PGVs, predominantly in DNA damage repair genes and mostly clinically actionable. Key genes with PGVs included #ATM, #TP53, #BRCA2 and #CHEK2. The study found a significant association between PGVs and male sex, and a potential, though not definitive, association with actionable genomic alterations. These findings suggest that targeted genetic testing could effectively identify at-risk individuals and inform personalized treatment and screening strategies, meriting further research in diverse populations.

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month! Let's come together to raise awareness. According to the WHO: - Breast cancer is the most common cancer among women worldwide. - In 2022, there were 2.3 million new cases of breast cancer, leading to 670,000 deaths globally. - It’s the leading cancer in women in 157 out of 185 countries. - While rare, 0.5–1% of breast cancer cases also occur in men. Thanks to advancements in screening and treatment, breast cancer mortality has decreased. However, 25–30% of patients still experience recurrence, with the disease spreading and often resulting in fatal outcomes. This highlights the need for new treatment targets, such as the insulin-like growth factor 1 receptor (IGF-1R). IGF-1R plays a role in breast cancer progression by promoting cell growth and survival, which can lead to faster tumor spread. Overexpression of IGF-1R is often linked to a poorer prognosis, as it activates pathways that support tumor growth. Researchers are currently exploring whether targeting IGF-1R might provide a new therapeutic option in breast cancer treatment.
