🌍 🤝The Al-Attiyah Foundation and the Qatar Environment & Energy Research Institute - QEERI co-hosted a workshop as part of Earthna’s Young Climate Leaders Internship Program on 15 October 2024. The program aims to equip young climate advocates with in-depth knowledge of climate science, sustainable solutions, and global environmental strategies. As part of the program, the workshop explored two essential components: innovation and technology’s role in tackling climate issues, and the significance of climate diplomacy in fostering international cooperation. QEERI led the technical session, highlighting emerging technologies that are driving sustainable energy solutions, while the Al-Attiyah Foundation facilitated the policy session, which focused on the importance of climate diplomacy and the global policies shaping climate action. We are happy to share the success of our recent Tech Talks session held on October 23rd, 2024, and managed by Dr. Sertac Bayhan, Principal Scientist at Qatar Environment & Energy Research Institute - QEERI. The event brought together leading experts to discuss advancements and transformative trends in energy systems. Dr. Mariusz Malinowski led an insightful session on Power Electronics and Hybrid Transformers, exploring how these technologies are reshaping energy infrastructure and addressing the complexities of modern energy distribution. Dr. Haitham Abu-Rub discussed the Challenges with the Transformation to a Renewable Energy-based Grid, highlighting key technical and infrastructural hurdles to achieving global sustainability goals. Lastly, Dr. Said Al-Hallaj presented innovative solutions for Fast-charging Electric Vertical Take-off and Landing Vehicles (eVTOL), showcasing the future of urban mobility and cleaner, more efficient transportation systems. We were excited to host two seminars at Qatar Environment & Energy Research Institute - QEERI, featuring Prof. Christophe Ballif, a leading expert in energy and materials from EPFL and the Sustainable Energy Center at CSEM. The first seminar, held on 14 October, focused on recent advancements in photovoltaics and their role in transforming global energy production. The second seminar, on 17 October, discussed innovative materials for the energy transition, including perovskite solar cells and advanced batteries. Dr. Khaled Mahmoud, Research Program Director at Qatar Environment & Energy Research Institute - QEERI, took part in WEFTEC 2024 in New Orleans. Dr. Khaled participated in the panel discussion titled "Wastewater Surveillance as an Efficient Tool for Monitoring Emerging Diseases: Health Impacts and Social Implications" on October 7th. During this session, he shared insights on how wastewater-based epidemiology (WBE) has become a vital tool for public health monitoring in densely populated areas, especially during events like the FIFA World Cup 2022™ in Qatar. The discussion emphasized WBE's role in detecting infectious diseases and its growing potential to monitor antimicrobial-resistant bacteria and respiratory viruses. Dr. Tareq Al-Ansari, Acting Executive Director of QEERI and Associate Professor at the College of Science and Engineering HBKU, recently participated in the EU-GCC Dialogue on Economic Diversification. On Sunday October 6th, Qatar Environment & Energy Research Institute - QEERI and Earthna co-hosted the "Energy Systems Modelling to Inform Policymaking" workshop as part of 2024's Qatar Sustainability Week. The workshop was aimed at decision-makers in government and industry, as well as the research community. Experts from Qatar (QEERI and Texas A&M University at Qatar) and the GCC (KAPSARC and American University of Sharjah) shared with participants information about their models, how they can be used to inform policy and their experience working with policymakers. At Hamad Bin Khalifa University’s Qatar Environment & Energy Research Institute - QEERI, we continue to achieve significant milestones in next-generation energy conversion and electronic devices. This year, the Disruptive Technology research program secured a noteworthy patent portfolio, marking a critical step towards impactful research outcomes that drive innovation and sustainability. Since 2019, our program has strategically aligned research efforts with market and academic impacts, resulting in the granting of four US non-provisional patents, three pending applications, and five provisional patents. One standout innovation includes a patent for a molecular 3D printer, integrating molecular self-assembly with additive manufacturing, promising a transformative impact on the energy and electronics sectors.
