Big Jobs #1 02:38
Now through the medium of Radio One We would like to dedicate songs to all our mums Thank you for having us when we were small If you hadn't cared for us we wouldn't be here at all To sing and and entertain ("Can I have a bit more bass?") Plug us in and turn on the mains We have to leave here by 9:00 Hope that we finish on time Trying hard to make it sound nice For all of our friends who put us up In the lodge at Sens God bless you all of the Gongs

about

A tape recently discovered in an attic in the Netherlands throws new light on these recordings. "Big Jobs" (a.k.a."To Mum and the Gongs") was part of the original Manor Studio demo session now documented here:

Sometime later, the swirly intro and outro were added, and the double-tracked vocals on the second version.

The lyrics and playing here here pretty much match exactly what Hatfield did for the B.B.C. 2½ weeks earlier on 24 July 1973 (the "lost session") but a new piano solo replaces the fuzz organ at 1:30. Presumably The Manor had a piano while the BBC Langham 1 did not. At 0:58 Pip can be heard asking for "a bit more bass..." which does NOT appear in the Lost Session recording, definitively distinguishing it as a separate recording, not just overdubbed.

Hatfield's debut single also came out of this session:

Discovered by Nic Sinclair in Richard's archives, this was listed only as "Big Jobs Manor Demo."

Frank Cairns, of the H&TN Facebook group, has pointed out that "Big Jobs #1" appeared on the official compilation CD "Hattitude" under the title "Grosso Lavoro" ("big job" in Italian)-though in noticeably worse fidelity. And of course there's no sign of "Big Jobs #2."
