Canary Media Takes Flight, Becoming Independent of RMI

Canary Media, an independent, nonprofit newsroom reporting on the clean energy transition, strikes out on its own after RMI’s launch and support over three years.

New York, NY – July 2024

After three years under the umbrella of RMI, Canary Media became fully independent on July 1, 2024. This is a major achievement for both Canary and RMI during a challenging period for the media industry as Canary grew during its time with RMI to become a leading voice in clean energy journalism.

In anticipation of this transition, Canary Media’s leadership team has worked with its board and RMI to establish a funding pipeline that can sustain it as a financially independent organization. The digital news outlet always maintained editorial independence. Canary Media is a charitable 501(c)(3) nonprofit.

Canary Media’s expert, in-depth reporting on clean energy and decarbonization is critical to the fight against climate change, spotlighting the policies, technologies, and people leading the way in the global energy transition.

Canary Media launched in 2021 with core staff from the recently-shuttered Greentech Media, and has since added talented journalists from Grist, Inside Climate News, Sierra magazine, and Morning Brew to its roster. Canary is now read regularly by members of Congress, leaders at the US Department of Energy, and other decision-makers across government and business, as well as concerned citizens. The organization is led by Eric Wesoff, Lisa Hymas, and Nicholas Rinaldi, and its newly formed board consists of Wesoff, RMI General Counsel and Trustee Marty Pickett, and Forum Mobility Executive VP Adam Browning.

“Canary Media is deeply grateful for RMI’s visionary support over the past three years and for recognizing the urgent need for smart news and storytelling about clean energy,” said Eric Wesoff, executive director of Canary Media. “We have ambitious plans for the months and years ahead to deploy our talented team of journalists to cover the fast-developing stories around clean power, industrial decarbonization, home electrification, and much more.”

RMI has a long track record of seeding and supporting new entities to maximize their impact. Examples include the Virtual Power Plant Partnership, ZEROgrid, and the Clean Energy Buyers Association. Canary Media was RMI’s first affiliate focused on journalism.

“The world needs fact-based journalism that tells stories from the front lines of the energy transition. Canary’s growth has proved that market need, and we’re excited to see them take flight as a fully independent non-profit,” said Jon Creyts, CEO of RMI.
