I always find it astounding how people's perceptions of others can change based on the assistance they receive from them. For instance, he told me a while back, "She is crazy. She is greedy. She wanted to take everything. She hadn't had enough." He was referring to his sister-in-law. Fast forward to a few days ago, and his opinion had shifted. "She went to therapy and now realizes that she makes mistakes and takes time off before reacting. She changed a lot." I recall the previous instance when she had given them a hard time with the inheritance, so his new perspective surprised me. Similarly, my grandmother had once raised her voice in anger about someone who wanted to give a gift to her child, saying, "How dare she dress my daughter? Doesn't my daughter have a mother?" However, in the present moment, the woman she had been angry with had helped her and was now considered a good person. These instances lead me to a few realizations: - We can't always accurately predict our behavior. - We may do things that we never thought we would. - Sometimes, it's best not to take certain people too seriously. Let them complain and stay neutral; you never know. #behavior #behavioralinsights #behavilab

Doing an action can change your thinking, but changing your thinking doesn't always mean you will change your behavior.

I find it intriguing how a simple action can change your behavior. It's simple and efficient. Doing an action that may or may not contradict your beliefs. 1. Let's say you think you are not good at traveling. Traveling and handling stressful situations can make you think you are skilled at traveling and not that bad. 2. Or you think bringing gifts is overrated and want to avoid being part of it. But you'll need to get gifts a few times because the context forces you to do so. Your initial thinking about giving gifts might have changed. 3. The same happens with bad things. Let's say you don't allow insults, and it is unimaginable to continue the relationship when a person does that to you. But one day, a person that you like starts poking you. And you allow it. Then, it may begin to say something mean. Once, twice… and you allow it. One day, it may start insulting you. After having this history with the person, you may allow it. We need to be cautious about behaviors because they can change many beliefs, good or bad. However, vice versa, this is only sometimes the case. Changing your thinking does not automatically make you behave differently. #behavior #behaviorascience #behavioraleconomics #criticalthinking

When I try to understand human behavior – which happens almost always – I look at the letters from the COM-B Model. The last time, I was the example. --- I stood in front of the receptionist, blinded by the fact that I wasn't supposed to brush my teeth before a medical analysis. It's a kid's mistake. The first letter of the COM-B Model refers to Capabilities. Does the individual have the physical or psychological capability to perform a behavior? If not, the behavior might not happen. Surprisingly, when people look for a lack of Motivation in an individual, such as trying to understand why they don't do something (or do it wrong), it might be a lack of capabilities. They don't know how to do it or don't have the physical capability to do it. One note: in my example, motivation was present through my experience or lack thereof. If I had had experience with pharyngeal exudate, I would have known better what to do. --- The takeaway: Verify if the person knows to do something physically or psychologically before thinking about motivation. "Embracing Resilience: Overcoming Attachment Challenges", written by Emilia Zăinel°, the owner of Behavi LAB, turned one year! 🎉 On this occasion, grab your gift! 🎁 3 days of free e-book download from 23 to 25 of June. Yuhuu! --- Sneak peek: "The keyword that sabotaged me is Control. It's okay to have control because otherwise, it would be difficult to survive in today's society. Yet, it becomes toxic when you want to control what others do or feel. Because you won't succeed. The result will be that they will distance themselves from you, leaving you with even greater anxiety. With an even greater need for control. Notice the vicious circle." 👉 Download it from here: https://amzn.to/3Jj3zhj --- #attachmenttheory #attachmentstyle #anxioustype #relathionships

My flight was delayed. I didn't give up, and I ran as fast as I could after the next flight. Still, I failed. Or the company systems are optimized to exclude outliers, as in any good measurement. I arrived on time, but I was rejected at the gate. But, as you know me, this is not a lesson about this company but about, exactly, human behavior. How? -- If you didn't suffer this event, imagine. You waited months until your holiday. You made some arrangements. You check your luggage and have only a few items on the airplane, wait to change the flight, and arrive tired but happy at your destination. But during the flight, they announced the flight was delayed, and they would let you know about the connection fight... And then they announce you... Some connection flights are missed, and they are sorry, but not yours! You think: If this plane arrives faster, will I have the time to run to the gate? Is it too far? Will the gate not closed yet? It's called HOPE. And you run, arrive on time, and, well, for some "system" reason, you are rejected and rescheduled. Stay with me. Imagine the frustration and rage. -- And now comes the exciting part. They offer accommodation in a nice hotel near the airport, with a complimentary dinner and breakfast + 15 euros voucher to spend at the airport. You accept the offer (not that you have other options), then find the hotel room very friendly, the food excellent, and live music. Can you say "this motherf•••er company"? It is the same situation since you lost time and money because of this, but What did just happen? I leave you to comment a little bit. 😅 -- P.S. Of course, go respect the "all-you-can-eat idea"; they pay for it 😂. #behavioralscience #behavior

I have observed lately what are the most potent behavioral science tactics people respond to. What influences them? What motivates them to decide? Now, there is science, and we know that a tactic works in some contexts and doesn't in others. --- Still, overall, what makes us tick? 1. Social Proof Social proof can take various forms (peer influence, authority, a friend of a friend's opinion, etc.). But believe it or not, people around me make decisions because of social norms in unharmful areas, like buying a laundry detergent, to areas that need thoughtful consideration, like illness treatment or significant investment. 2. Reciprocity It's wild to observe and painful to live the reciprocity. You helped me, and now I feel obliged to do the same, even if I may not want, like, or have the time. It is nice to receive, no doubt. Still, nothing is for free. 3. Commitment It is not only in a good way. For example, I promised I would do X, or I did X, and now I need to keep up with my word. But often, I see this form of commitment as a sabotaging way related to the ego. I made a mistake or was wrong with something, but I cannot acknowledge it. And because of this, I will continue saying or doing wrong. Some other behavioral science principles exist, but these alone can make us make unfavorable decisions. 💡The solution? As always, bend your ego; a few things can harm you. --- Stay tuned for other behavioral science reflections. #behavior #behavioralscience #behavioraleconomics

The world is not as we see it. But as we interpret it. Whenever I talk about the same story, whichever is that, I know my audience will judge differently. Their experience and cultural background dictate how they think about the world. This is not to say we should be cautious with our world, but know that our words and actions once put out there, will be interpreted. You can predict the impact if you expose the same story, told similarly, to multiple people. It is like exposing your product to get feedback. At some point, you will get a similar impression and can predict a little about the future. We need to be careful, but at the same time relaxed with our opinions about the world. #behavioralscience

What does a solution to protect shoes teach us about behavior science? Before laughing, hear me out. --- Some companies use anchoring exceptionally. Anchoring is when you use a number as a reference point for the next decision. For example, if I see a cup of coffee at $7 and the next at $4, I could consider it cheap. Imagine if I saw the first time a coffee was at $1. 😊 Companies like Ikea, Deichmann (shoes), and Apple use anchoring by the book. For example, buying an expensive piece makes it look like the additional items are cheap. --- Deichmann does this very well. You pay $40 for some Adidas, and then they offer you a spray for $4 to ”protect” the leather. You believe it’s a small price, so I have many ”protected sprays” at home that I never use. If you were to go to a simple shop and see the $4 spray, you would choose the much cheaper one. 😊 Now, where did they make the mistake? They invented a footwear machine that can do magic in one minute, and your shoes will no longer get dirty. This sounds great, yes? Not if you suffer from The Effort Heuristic - the value of an object based on perceived production effort. It is like a plumber solving your door handle in 1 minute for $400. ”What the hell?” Staying in the queue and observing how this machine solved the dirt issue at the store in less than one minute made me averse to buying the solution. More than that, I started questioning the process: Do you want me to think your machine saves my shoes from dirt? --- The takeaway: Making things simple and fast is not always the solution. 😊 --- ©Marlowes Shopping   #behavioralscience #behavioraleconomics #behavior #ancoring

From time to time, you need a break from work to talk about your job. To inspire youth and show how behavioral science can make a difference.   It was an engaging presentation in which, for the first time, I shared my personal story—how I went from Craiova to Sibiu and Bucharest, from science high school to journalism, philosophy, and behavioral economics.   It was not only a presentation but a story about real life. When I was like them, I wished people would be honest about their "success" and how it was exactly, but I only got unrealistic presentations.   As a struggling student, I wondered, "If reality was like that, why was the world different?"   I never learned much from this kind of presentation, but from when someone told me what was happening behind the curtains. No bulls**t.   If you ignore reality, you will inevitably become spoiled, weak, and unable to withstand life's challenges, like a feeble seedling that cannot cope with the force of the wind.   Thank you, Cătălina Apostol and AIESEC, for the invitation.   #behavioralscience #behavioraleconomic #speaking
