It was an absolute pleasure to have visited the facilities at Airbus Canada as part of the team’s research for #Newsweek’s inaugural report on the aviation and aerospace industries. This year, Airbus is celebrating its 40th anniversary of presence in Canada. A huge thank you to CEO, Benoît SCHULTZ for taking the time to discuss Airbus’ A220 programme and how the company intends to balance ramping up production from 6 to 14 aircraft a month in 2026 while keeping sustainability commitments in mind. And finally thanks to Amélie Forcier and Raymond M. for making the day so special and being so accommodating during the tour! Launch date: October 2024 #aerospace #aviation #newsweekreports #Airbus #A220

Today marks the launch of Newsweek’s inaugural feature report on the aerospace industry! Can resources and regulations keep pace with the demand? We interviewed approximately 100 executives across the value chain to find out. “Externally, large military conflicts and aggressive actions by countries like Russia, China, and Iran pose cyber risks. Our main fear is state-funded cyberattacks targeting airport operations, such as air traffic control systems” says Henry Hernandez, President & CEO of Inter-Con Security. The world’s established “big three” aerospace clusters are undisputed. While Seattle, Washington, (U.S.), and Toulouse (France) have been in contention for the crown for over 40 years, it’s the third-place spot that stands out for its unique profile. “Emerging from COVID, restoring air access and routes was central to our strategy. We partnered with airlines and airports to reestablish key routes and developed long-term partnerships with international airlines” says Marsha Walden, CEO of Destination Canada. How can a fossil-fueled industry answer calls to become more sustainable? We explore the avenues requiring significant support and investment - from electric and hydrogen to sustainable aviation fuels. “Balancing economic factors is crucial—we can't create more problems by making energy unaffordable. The U.S. government’s Grand Challenge aims for 3 billion gallons by 2030 and IATA has said that 60% of airline fuel needs to be sustainable by 2050, but right now, we’re at less than 0.1%,”, says Todd Borgmann, CEO of Calumet. In the wake of ongoing high-profile safety scandals, aviation is under heightened levels of public and governmental scrutiny, while original equipment manufacturers are ramping up production targets. “Regulation is the gatekeeper for public safety. Without it, operators could cut corners, risking public safety and the industry's survival. We’ve seen from time to time that complacency in aircraft maintenance and regulation has led to safety issues and lapses. Even if high demand could be a contributing factor, it should never be an excuse for cutting corners” says Jeffrey Lam, President of Commercial Aerospace, ST Engineering This interview is part of #Newsweek’s inaugural feature on the aviation and aerospace industries - ‘The New Era of Aviation & Aerospace’ - launching on 8th November.
