Focus on sustainability
The EU is raising the bar for plastic packaging!
From 2030, drastic regulations for packaging will apply in the European Union (Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR))
1. 100% recyclability:
From January 1, 2030, all packaging on the EU market must be recyclable.
2. Minimization:
Weight and volume of packaging must be reduced to the absolute minimum.
3. Recycled content:
Plastic packaging must contain at least 30% recycled material by 2030 and 65% by 2040.
4. Highest standards:
From 2038, only packaging with the best recycling quality grades (A or B) will be permitted.
The future of packaging lies in the perfect balance between functionality, sustainability and brand expression.
- Brand owners must integrate eco-design principles.
- Packaging manufacturers face the challenge of developing innovative, sustainable solutions.
- Creative agencies need to create designs that combine brand identity and sustainability.
The future of packaging lies in the perfect balance between functionality, sustainability and brand expression.
Implementing the PPWR regulations is a major challenge, and success in this environment requires close collaboration and coordination throughout the entire value chain.
This change means in concrete terms:
- A fixed time target puts everyone involved under considerable time pressure.
- The complexity of the entire process increases significantly.
- Communication channels expand and branch out, often due to uncertainties in this new terrain.
- Increased need for precise project management and coordination.
- Increased susceptibility to errors due to uncoordinated and redundant communication channels.
- The path of a product to the point of sale becomes more complicated and time-consuming.
However, with a consolidation of the individual requirements and a centralized process, the complexity of the process can be reduced and a timely and compliant positioning of the products at the point of sale can be achieved.
